Emma Goldman Describes Her Deportation in the Era of the Red Scare.
After World War I, a “red scare” gripped the United States. One reflection of this climate of hysteria was in the “Palmer raids” on radicals. Striking without warning and without warrants, Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer’s men smashed union offices and the headquarters of Communist and Socialist organizations. They concentrated whenever possible on aliens rather than citizens, because aliens had fewer rights.
In December 1919, in their most famous act, Palmer’s agents seized 249 resident aliens. Those seized were placed on board a ship, the Buford, bound for the Soviet Union. Deportees included the feminist, anarchist, and writer Emma Goldman, who later recalled the deportation in her autobiography, Living My Life.

1. it may have started just after WWI, but lasted up through the 50's
thousands of lives lost, millions of lives destroyed, all because of a 'scare' just like our WoD and WoT today.

2. The reason the Greatest Generation was stereotyped as Establishment "Pigs" in the 60s...
Edited on Sun Oct-09-11 04:17 PM by Odin2005
...is because most of the Greatest Generation's radical socialists and labor activists were forced out of public life by McCarthyism, and thus the Boomers only saw the Establishment tools and RW Nutjobs in that generation growing up.

3. Conveniently, for the Powers that Be, the term "terrorist"
Can now take the place of "alien."

It is also convenient that any leader who might have brought about a "unified message" from the OWS movement, has been eliminated.

It still amazes me how Wellstone's plane went down, although piloted by TWO pilots.

And John Kennedy Jr's plane went down as well. With the Coast Guard refusing to look for the transmitter that emitted the plane's location, even after Ted Kennedy called the Clinton WH to get a search started.

The searchers deliberately stonewalled the search.

Happy Birthday, John!

5. After all these decades I am STILL learning that we are re-inventing the wheel on social issues.
I am on a history kick today, it is cloudy and windy, might as well educate meself.
