This is what surveyor equipment sights actually look like.
From a little Googling. I'm no expert on surveying, or guns for that matter, but from what I discovered in 5 minutes, there is no way these could be surveying sights.

2. D'oh, we meant to say they are four color registration marks
Anyone familiar with 4 color printing process knows this symbol is used in color registration.

The four color cross-hair and circle register mark gives the press operator a single mark to monitor during the press run confirming that accurate registration (alignment) is maintained between the colors.

Apparently they don't know how to really spin the message. Perhaps they'll see this and change their story once again.

4. Wonder what led to the unreccing of this...
Not that it's a fantastic post or anything, but I don't see why it's so negative...

6. In fairness...
In fairness, a rifle scope doesnt have a reticle (the technical name for the crosshairs) that protrudes beyond the scope:

O.T trivia:

Rifle scope reticles were for many years (I don't know now days though) made from the silk of black widow spiders.

7. Universally, I think most people looking at the picture would say its
meant as a targeting sight. Wasn't that the point. Spinning it now just adds more eyes to the picture, rather than just shutting one's mouth and not making stupid comments about it now.

8. I can't imagine anyone would be such a willing tool
that they would go along with the surveyor equipment line. But I'm sure I'll be surprised.
