22. now yes but in the past it was
Under the old system you had only one wild card and teams from the same division only played each other as a last resort.

26. actually it was even more common in decades past, and the one-wild-card system didn't last long
Edited on Sun Jan-16-11 11:16 PM by fishwax
The wild card was first used in 1970 and then a second wild card team was added in 1978. Even with one wild card you occasionally had division rivals playing each other in the championship game if the wild card team won and the champ from the same division won as well. It was before my time, but I know that when the Denver Broncos went to their first Super Bowl they beat the Raiders in the AFC Championship Game.

Then for several years after that you had two wild card teams and three divisions. The wild card teams would play each other the first week, and then the division champs would play each other (with one division champ playing the winner of the wild card game) in the second week. When the Raiders won the Super Bowl in '83, they beat Seattle in the AFC title game, and Seattle had beaten the Broncos in the Wild Card game, so Seattle had to play two division rivals in the playoffs that year.

Then they added a third wild card team in the late 80s, so you had three division champions and three wild card teams, and from then until they split into four divisions (when the Houston Texans joined the league) you were fairly likely to have division rivals meet in the playoffs, since either every division had two teams in the playoffs or one division would have three.

More history than you were interested in, perhaps :) But there have been dozens of division rivals playing in the playoffs over the years, and I'm a bit surprised that the Packers and Bears have never had that pleasure :)

18. Chicago & Pittsburgh hosting the Championship games!
Bears will have their hands full with the Packers, whom they haven't met in post-season play since 1941 (despite these 2 teams playing more games against each other than any NFL matchup in history) ...

... and if the Jets can win consequtive road playoff games against the Colts, Patriots, & Steelers it will perhaps be remembered as the most awesome playoff run by a Wild Card team in NFL history.
