$10 or more per week since the Republicans took control of the House. Coincidence? I think not. They've got us by the short hairs now.

The Chinese Garlic was in a "bag". Roughly 5 bulbs or 5 ounces for $1.99 (so $6.40 a pound). The USA grown loose/bulk garlic was $2.49 a pound and since it was "bulk" you could get as little or as much as you want/need.

Crazy when they keep importing Chinese garlic despite US band being cheaper.

24. From Wikipedia
The first payment was paid when due in June 1921.<5> That was the beginning of an increasingly rapid devaluation of the Mark which fell to less than one third of a cent by November 1921 (approx. 330 Marks per US Dollar). The total reparations demanded was 132,000,000,000 (132 billion) goldmarks which was far more than the total German gold and foreign exchange.

25. Every Target and Walmart in San Diego County now has a food section
(Most every)... And they are not Supercenters or Super Target, but they are cutting into the typical grocery stores business. Walmart and Target are not union either. I expect at least a couple of supermarket chains will be shuttered within two years.

26. albertson's was acquired by supervalue, cvs & cerberus capital in 2006.
Edited on Tue Jan-18-11 12:50 AM by Hannah Bell
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albertsons_(SuperValu)

i hadn't seen an albertson's for years even before that. all the ones in my neck of the woods disappeared years ago.

here's what you probably heard:

Supervalu Inc., which operates the Albertsons and Save-A-Lot grocery chains and recently announced it was selling Bristol Farms, reported Tuesday that it recorded a loss for its third quarter.

It said the shortfall resulted from a fall in revenue, a charge to reflect the declining value of some assets, slimmer margins and costs associated with closing stores.

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9KMAFSG1.htm

there's a difference between a "third-quarter loss" & "operating at a loss".

nothing to do with food prices that i can see.

27. Supervalue. I guess that's why they laid off half the checkers at the nearest Albertsons.
And cut the rest of the checkers to less than 32 hours a week.

They don't have to offer insurance to "part-time" employees in this state.

29. Albie's here is ridiculously expensive.
And I don't like their anti-union stance, either. I'm sure they probably pay Sprawl Mart wages, because I tend to see a lot of new faces every time I set foot in there.

I'm a Safeway girl, myself. Several people on their board are blue :dem:, and their company tends to balance their donations on both sides of the aisle, even though their CEO was a Shrub Ranger. On the other hand, Fry's (Kroger) gives almost exclusively to Repukes, so it makes me less motivated to patronize them - I shop there about as much as I go to Albie's, which is basically never.

I'm in sunny AZ too. :)

32. Albertson's was bought out
here several years ago by Save Mart stores (a local chain). Buy in bulk, buy only what's on sale and eat less meat. Cook at home and cook from scratch (not that difficult). Grow a garden if you can. All together, you can save at LEAST 50% on your grocery bill.
