Chavez says Gaddafi is a martyr
"Sadly the death of Gaddafi has been confirmed," said Chavez, who had just returned to Venezuela from cancer treatment in Cuba.

"They assassinated him. It is another outrage," the Venezuelan leader told reporters in the town of La Grita.

"We shall remember Gaddafi our whole lives as a great fighter, a revolutionary and a martyr," he said.

Chavez had defended Gaddafi since the start of the uprising against the Libyan leader's regime in February, and accused NATO of using the conflict to gain control over Libya's oil.

"The saddest thing is that in its quest to dominate the world, the empire and its allies are setting it on fire," Chavez said, referring to the US by his preferred nickname.

2. I don't blame Chavez for thinking the enemies of his enemies were his friends
But I really don't think Gaddaffi was anything other than a tin pot dictator

3. Same here.
But I admire much of what Chavez has accomplished in Venezuela, so it's deeply disappointing to me to see that he holds this unsupportable opinion of Gaddaffi.

8. Word. He sits atop a sea of oil...
And he's been in our crosshairs more than once because of that. I don't blame him one bit for expressing a lack of enthusiasm. It doesn't mean I share 100% of his views, but I hope we don't start seeing more drones flying in South America.

4. Chavez has done remarkable things to reduce poverty and severe poverty in his country.
For that he has a very strong base of support in his home country and I can't say I don't see why. That being said he can be a bit authoritarian for my liking, but given that he is less so than any of our past US presidents for the last 40+ years I don't see why I have much room to criticize the people of Venezuela for electing him.

I don't like his comments on Gaddafi, but why are we singling him out? I don't understand the excessive campaign to demonize the man.

9. Not only that, but Chavez has done a lot more to help the poor of his country than Obama has.
It would be nice if Obama acted more like Chavez and less like Bush.

11. "We shall remember Gaddafi our whole lives as a great fighter, a revolutionary and a martyr,"
....sorry Hugo, I suppose you can't be expected to be correct 100% of the time....Gaddafi will be remembered, but not for that....sadly, our purposes and the corporate/MIC purposes came together over Mommar....

"The saddest thing is that in its quest to dominate the world, the empire and its allies are setting it on fire,"

....I can't argue with that....
