Oh Boy... The Right-Wing Does NOT Like This... 'Banker's Wife Joins Occupy Protests' - Newser
Banker's Wife Joins Occupy Protests
STACEY HESSLER IS A MOTHER OF FOUR WHO SAYS SHE'S 'FIGHTING FOR A BETTER WORLD'
By John Johnson, Newser Staff
Posted Oct 21, 2011 3:09 PM CDT

<snip>

(NEWSER) – The Occupy Wall Street protester of the day must be Stacey Hessler, a 38-year-old banker's wife and mother of four from Florida who is camping out in Zuccotti Park. “I have no idea what the future holds, but I’m here indefinitely,” Hessler tells the New York Post. She likens her situation to that of members of the military who have to temporarily leave their families. Her kids range in age from 7 to 17, and hubby is a former Bank of America financial adviser now working for a Florida bank. “He says he’s working for ‘the Man,’ and I’m fighting against him,” says Hessler.

The Post can barely conceal its contempt—the first paragraph says she "ditched her family"—and Gawker mocks the tone of the profile. It makes it sound "like she's some unsuspecting housewife who was brainwashed by hippies via Facebook," writes John Cook. "Who will think of the children?" he adds (sarcastically). "How selfish of her to leave them in the care of her husband and friends while pursuing something so frivolous as joining a political movement she believes in." (For the record, Hessler's mom thinks she's being "selfish.")

And from NYMag...

At Least One Occupy Wall Street Protester Is Married to a Banker, Has Kids
NYMag

<snip>

With four children and a banker husband back home in Florida, Stacey Hessler is spending her days occupying. Lately, she's been cleaning Zuccotti Park, meditating, and giving hugs at the "empathy" table. "I have no idea what the future holds," she said, "but I'm here indefinitely. Forever." In the life she left behind, her kids range in age from 7 to 17, and her husband, formerly a financial adviser at Bank of America, works for a local bank. He is not pleased about this newfound radicalism: "He says he’s working for ‘the Man,' and I’m fighting against him," Hessler said. But she's a soldier:

"Military people leave their families all the time, so why should I feel bad?" a defiant Hessler said. "I’m fighting for a better world."

Her mother called her "selfish." With her dreadlocks and disregard for traditional family values, the New York Post thinks she's perfect.
- Perfect for mocking I presume...

20. Sadly I have indeed seen people on the right trash women in the military....
for "abandoning their children" when deployed. As I said below, if I were a father I'd be pissed off at the implication I wasn't capable of caring for my children in their mother's absence. It certainly holds men in rather low regard.

37. The only reason those men believe that is because
they have only THEMSELVES to use as any basis of comparison, and I would think that if I were a Limbaugh dittohead, even I wouldn't place much faith in my ability to raise children in an appropriate way....Its a form of Projection, for those who do not now, and have never EVER understood what proper Manhood consists of.

5. I wonder what her kids are thinking.
The dred-locked Florida mom, who also wears Star Wars tees, told The Post she's talked to her husband and children just three times since she's been camping in Zuccotti Park.

6. If Dad can't take care of the
kids for awhile, then he shouldn't have had them. Does everyone really think males are totally incapable of being fathers???? Or is that what the fathers want us to think???

Go Stacey! Stacey deserves a life and some freedom as well!

9. Amazing woman.
Edited on Fri Oct-21-11 05:13 PM by Youth Uprising
Expect a whole slew of sexist slurs from the right heading her direction and some attacks on her based on her class coming from the far left (which I consider myself a part of). You can expect her to be called dishonest or a weak-kneed reformist who doesn't want real change and is fearful of losing her class status. One thing that pisses me off about the Communist left is the utter contempt they have towards anyone who is a member of the Petite bourgeoisie and the bigotry towards those on the left who aren't full fledged Communists, mainly Liberals. I loled a lot reading some of the tripe posted at RevLeft regarding the OWS protests. They claimed the protests would fizzle out in a few days, that the makeup of the protests was composed entirely of young, white, Petit bourgeoisie kids who where beholden to the Capitalist system, and that there where no members of the working class in attendance (as if you can tell what class someone belongs to just by looking at a picture online), instead of the ethnically, racially, age, and class diverse movement we know it to be.

You won't see Diana F. Cantor there! Why the poor woman didn't even know that her bank received 267.2 million dollars in bailout funds. Everyone should read about the poor dear.

some foreign land, but Ms. Hessler is pilloried for going off and fighting a much greater home-grown evil in the homeland. May God bless this true American hero and patriot. :patriot:

31. I am very cautious when I hear that line parroted.
Because to a lot of people, the military being a volunteer force means that they dont have to care for the troops when they get back. Because we asked for it.

Or that 15 month deployments to a war zone is ok, because we asked for it.

Or going to fight an unjust war doesnt bother us, or doesnt matter. Because we must have wanted to fight any and all wars. Because we volunteered.

Or that the VA should be disbanded, all veterans benefits gutted, because since we volunteered we are somehow not entitled to any compensation or help when the organization we volunteered to be in fucks us over.

I am a vet and I grit my teeth whenever I hear the right wingers say that. I hope none of that is what you mean when you say we choose. Because I didnt choose to get fucked over.

34. That line was parroted only in context to a response to my post indicating the fine lady did not
have to join the OWS protest, whereas those in the military must go where assigned. Incidentally, very few on this board bash any and every thing RW more often, more fervently, and with more gusto than I, including RW policies and actions taken by/supported by blue-dog Democrats, those in the Executive Branch of this Administration, and certainly the so-called felonious five on the SCOTUS when handing down a RW Citizens United-type decision: BTW, the RW treatment of our veterans is beyond abominable. You can trust me to be all over any thing smacking of RW garbage like ugly on an ape. ;) :patriot:

I have to defend veterans way more than I should in life. People now-a-days lack compassion to ANYONE. Its getting strange in this country

33. And in most cases of people joining the military, like mine
It was either volunteer to the army, or volunteer to not go to college. Or volunteer to be unemployed. Before people know the face of war, it seems like an easy; albeit unfair choice.

Not everyone has the same opportunity in this country. Most people in the military are in there because the alternative is a wasted life. Poor people with no chance in the world. The military is a way out of the ghetto, and until we make sure that EVERYONE has an equal opportunity without having to volunteer to die, the military is the only way.

19. Let me guess. Dad gets sent on an extended business trip to oversee a merger or something...
and no one would question the well-being of the children.

If I were a father I think I'd be insulted by this. It would seem to imply men are not capable of caring for their own children.
