In the early 70's we moved out to the burbs and my parents let my brother and I decorate our room to ease the fifth move in so many years...
We picked out these huge black dots on one roll of wallpaper and the same sized peace signs for the alternative rolls...
The guy who did the papering hung the paper upside down...
Thirty-five years after, I still get people telling me they remembered those upside down peace signs.
They were fun when we were smoking the pot...

9. MLK, Harvey Milk, Cesar Chavez - Be proud of who you are - I am a Unionized CA Teacher |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-30-11 12:04 PM by AnotherMother4Peace
fighting to reform No Child Left Behind - a set up for failure for both teachers and students: collateral damage for the greedy folks vying for those big educational bucks & who are determined to break the union. I've administered far too many NCLB tests to students who are in special education or second language learners - it is cruel to these student and unfair to factor in these scores to the general population.
Harvey Milk would always say - come out to your neighbors, friends, family - Tell them who you are, because chances are people will still love you, and support you. And would be more likely to vote for your best interests.

The other day in a supermarket parking lot I saw a bumper sticker that said: you can't spell the word "liberals' without "lies" and "bs" and as I saw the guy getting into his car I thought: without liberals you'd be working 6 day weeks at low wages, without any benefits and no chance to retire until you die.All the lies and bs are from the right wing talk shows you listen to. About a year ago, when I moved back to my home town, I hadn't had a chance to reset my car radio. I turned it on and Rush was on, I pushed a button and he was on again. I thought: Oh, no I'm now in a liberal talk show free zone. I'm sure that guy with the bumper sticker listens to him and hannity and Dennis Miller everyday and it's deadened his brain.

11. A Liberal Definition by John F. Kennedy: |
|
Acceptance Speech of the New York Liberal Party NominationSeptember 14, 1960 What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."... http://www.liberalparty.org/JFKLPAcceptance.html

Neo-liberals oppose everything on that list, except women's right to vote, and that they don't care about one way or the other.

14. Republicans stole that word, gutted it, said it with a sneer every time they used it, destroyed it. |
|
Why? Because most the nations of the world are liberal democracies. Liberalism won the cold war.
