David Axelrod goes there: GOP may be trying to destroy economy on purpose

Here’s David Axelrod, on CNN today, pushing back on Candy Crowley’s suggestion that Obama bears some of the blame for Congress’s failure to act on the economy:

I think this is something — something different going on right now. When you have the leader — the Republican leader of the Senate say, our number one goal — in the midst of this economy, our number one goal is to defeat the president, and they’re acting like it.

They don’t want to cooperate. They don’t want to help. Even on measures to help the economy that they traditionally have supported before, like a payroll tax cut, like infrastructure, rebuilding our roads and bridges and surface transport. These — so you have to ask a question, are they willing to tear down the economy in order to tear down the president or are they going to cooperate?

And, listen, there’s a reason why the Congress is at 9 percent in some polls, approval, lowest in history. Because this is different than we’ve ever seen before.

3. That's WaPo's word.
Axelrod pretty much flat-out says it's the case.

4. Aw c'mon now we've known the republicans have been
Clearly working to destroy the economy for years. They want economic misery in the hopes that it gets blamed on democrats and they retake control of government. And more their platform since Reagan has been to shrink government to reduce it to the size where it can be drowned. They run on the promise of destroying government to free corporations.

5. At this point, there is nothing that would significantly improve the economy by election time
The fundamental problem is that Obama spent all his politcal capital during the first two years on health care, achieving a non-solution to a secondary problem.

He did not spend the first two years with a Democratic controlled Congress on fixing the economy.

It is too late now.

16. Afraid so. When anyone says they are deliberately trying to destroy
our economy someone always asks why they would do that. It is simple - they are not worried about the economy of any one nation. They are worried about the global economy of multinational corporations. The weaker the national governments the stronger the corporate control.

18. BINGO!!!
I agree with you a thousand times. It's about global corporations and their power over national (regulating) governments.

17. Yes, it is not just because of President Obama - they have been
practicing disaster capitalism since raygun. They are out to destroy strong national government so that corporatism can thrive.

9. legislative treason.
You don't need to conspire with an enemy to commit treason. When you refuse to act in the best interests of this country in your capacity as a legislator in order to further your minority economic/political agenda...I think that's a treasonous act.

Nothing in their oath of office allows them to put their political interests ahead of the general welfare of this country. If the Democratic agenda in Congress doesn't help this country, you can use it against them in the next election. Refusing to allow this legislation to come to a vote is killing the very idea of democracy that this system is supposed to support.
