OWS Supports Occupy Oakland Wednesday Nov 2 to shut down the 1% with a city wide general strike

http://occupywallst.org/

Below is the proposal passed by the Occupy Oakland General Assembly on Wednesday October 26, 2011 in reclaimed Oscar Grant Plaza. 1607 people voted. 1484 voted in favor of the resolution, 77 abstained and 46 voted against it, passing the proposal at 96.9%. The General Assembly operates on a modified consensus process that passes proposals with 90% in favor and with abstaining votes removed from the final count.

Proposal

We as fellow occupiers of Oscar Grant Plaza propose that on Wednesday November 2, 2011, we liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%.

We propose a city wide general strike and we propose we invite all students to walk out of school. Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland to shut down the city.

All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them.

While we are calling for a general strike, we are also calling for much more. People who organize out of their neighborhoods, schools, community organizations, affinity groups, workplaces and families are encouraged to self organize in a way that allows them to participate in shutting down the city in whatever manner they are comfortable with and capable of.

The whole world is watching Oakland. Let’s show them what is possible.

8. No problem. Also heard that Oakland's teacher's union is joining, too...
Someone posted a thread on here last night about a notice teachers at one school sent home to parents telling them they would not be in on November 2nd because they'd be in the streets with the 99%.

There's also plans to converge on the port and shut it down before the night shift arrives. The ILWU has also called upon its workers to support the general strike in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdoyw5PhzJc

7. Occupy SF is coming to join Oakland
I'm sure some will stay and continue to occupy the SF camp but Occupy SF made that announcement at our GA the other night

6. I'll be there
and what is more exciting to me is that my daughter will be too. She's "not political" but she understands that this is for all of us and it is important. Either that or she's doing it to make me happy. ;)

There are also some teachers who are actually thinking of participating DURING the school day. If they cannot, however, people have been asking them to join when they can since there will be three marches at 9:00, 12:00, and 5:00. The 5:00 march will be especially important because we will be marching down to the Port of Oakland. The longshoremen told us that they cannot participate but do support the strike AND if we picket at the docks, they will not cross the line. They have shift change at 7:00 pm. Some of the customers are from Wall St. so this could hurt them. Also other unions that cannot march are going to the docks at 6:00 pm and will have food there for us. :)

9. I had read on another site that the ILWU doesn't usually cross picket lines...
Even in defiance of management at times. Good to hear they won't cross this one.

10. That doesn't surprise me. They're one of the more militant
unions left today. Just remember that the leadership CANNOT advocate for this. It is ILLEGAL for them to do so and they could be fined and even jailed if they do. Plus the ILWU has already been fined for their struggle in Longview, WA., so they've got their own struggle still going on. A struggle that the Occupy movement in the Pacific NW ought to get involved in in solidarity.

At some point, even the union leadership will have to bite the bullet and go along with the membership in illegal strike action, but it's not time for that yet. It must get MUCH more widespread before it's time for that.

However just because the leadership cannot advocate for it (YET), doesn't mean that the MEMBERSHIP can't join in with a "sick out" or a wildcat strike.

13. I will but thank to you too
for promoting this. Are you in the Bay area?

We are planning on going for most of the day although I told her NOT to feel bad if she wanted to leave early. She can always come back and meet me somewhere away from the park.
