Penn State Students, Even More Tactless, If You can Believe It
Because, you know, riots in defense of child-rape enablers over some stupid sport isn't bad enough.

(CBS) - As the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State continues to unfold, the pain and outrage over Jerry Sandusky and the Penn State football program extend beyond the victims. A sister of one of the victims, herself a junior Penn State, relates her experience on campus, where some students are making light of the situation. The sister says that there are people on campus making jokes about being "Sanduskied."

In an interview with The Patriot-News, the sister describes her horror at what she hears from her classmates.

"I can't escape it," says the sister, whose name was withheld by The Patriot-News. "I've been going to minimal classes, because every class I go to I get sick to my stomach. People are making jokes about it. I understand they don't know I'm involved and it was my brother, but it's still really hard to swallow that."

<clip>

"I've just been really upset about it all because a lot of people aren't focusing on the victims in this," she told The Patriot-News. "And instead they're focusing on other things, like football. As much as you shouldn't blame the football players ... they should be focusing on their respect for the families and what they've been through."

1. The ball players should be taking the lead on this
of course, Penn State may have made an edict that no one is allowed to talk about it.

I should stop making assumptions...

I thought "True Liberals" capitalized would be a dead giveaway.

35. Baseball is a thinking man's sport. Take it back from the RW assholes
Oh wait, RW assholes try to claim every sport these days.

Never mind that the average sports fan is a liberal.

With the GOP in charge of organized football, is it any wonder what happened at Penn State?

15. I played both sports.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-11 04:22 PM by Elwood P Dowd
Baseball from age 9 to age 21 and football in Jr High and High School. Baseball is something to watch until the college and NFL football season arrives. When it does arrive, it's no more baseball watching except for the World Series.

Now playing the two sports is different. I would rather play baseball than football. Playing in the actual game is fun with football, but 4-5 days of grueling 2-3 hour practices is a pain in the ass. Its also sometimes painful getting out of bed the morning after a game.

27. Please don't add a smile.
Some are just trying to have a moment of levity that doesn't involve hating every single person at Penn State.

9. They're not thinking
However, unless the young woman mentioned in the story goes around campus wearing a sign that says, "My brother is one of Jerry Sandusky's victims," it's quite probable that none of the people she's heard make jokes about the situation mean it personally to her. Humor, in this instance, is definitely a defense mechanism, crude in its use, but meant to stave off unpleasantness. Many of the students at Penn State doubtless chose to go there in part because of Joe Paterno and the football program. The rush of recent events is a direct attack on those students' self-image and identity, and that's the source of the bad and inappropriate humor, not what happened to Sandusky's victims.

16. I never really liked football. My dad watched it and yelled at the TV a lot
That kind of made it unfun.

My in-laws, however, made football fun. They had a blast no matter which team played which way.

7. honor system? please
college sports are so corrupt because of this kind of self indulgence and ostrich-like behavior. It used to be an honor to be involved in sports, and good sportsmanship and uprightness were required to participate.

I suppose that's all a thing of the past.

8. I wonder if donations to the college will dry up due to how the students are preceived
(and I know it isn't all but the vocal) as being insensitive to the true victims.

12. It's a form of denial. Telling sick jokes and focusing attention
away from the victims is a way to make it seem less real, less threatening.

19. Bullying by proxy. The people joking about it probably consider the
molested boys to have been gay and therefore deserving of whatever happened to them.

Of course, they are blind to what kind of legitimate sexual deviant/criminal Sandusky was.

28. I'm hoping that young lady will consider transferring to another university
where people believe that child rape isn't a joke. Stop giving Penn State her money. I hate that the burden is on her, but these people are buttheads and I'm afraid she'll never be able to get away from their insensitivity. Yes, she could be outrageous and stay and fight with them, but she needs to consider the cost personally.

31. Some students don't have the money
to transfer. Some don't want to go far away from home. I'm guessing that there are stupid fucks on all campuses across the country making similar jokes. Maybe having someone come forward for her would start a discussion of why these jokes are so painful and awful. Many at Penn State might be able to support her more than elsewhere, since many Penn Staters are hurting about this whole thing, too.

38. I agree about the money thing and staying close to family.
I've had to make those decisions for myself when it came to college.

I wonder if she's evaluated it as an option, that's all I'm saying.

Let's hope her friends and others can rally behind her and give her the support that she and others need so they don't have to take on the monsters and insensitive people alone.

37. Where do you live?
Saintsville, USA? I'm sure you have your share of child molesters in your hometown, too. So maybe we should wipe your hometown off the face of the map, along with everywhere where a child molester/rapist/criminal exists. How'd that work for you?
