I think the UC Davis students have reminded us of a remarkable tool...
You might recall that the words that ended Joe McCarthy's reign of terror were, "At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

The UC Davis students shamed TPTB totally and did it with dignity, grace, courage and intelligence.

They didn't have to say a thing, just stand witness as we stand witness along with them.

2. Just saw the video of whatshername's perp walk among them
It was a very quiet witnessing. All you could hear was the woman's footsteps. They forced her to face those whom she gave the orders to brutalize. Good for them.

She's quite good at it, can stay up for minutes at a time.

I'm terrible with dates and I've lost track but I think my older one is about eight and the younger five or six.

I have the feeling that even if she doesn't resign her position she will be forever changed by this.
We need to remind ourselves that THAT (inner and outer shifts in consciousness and understanding) is the goal, not punishment.
Forgiveness and redemption have to be offered or there is no room for transformation individually or as a collective.

10. I see your point..
On the other hand I read the memo the Chancellor released and it was a tour de force of corporate speak non-denial buttcovering.

What bothers me more is that someone with such a flawed a moral sense has reached such a high level in a university system..

But what am I saying, the Sandusky child rape coverup looks like it may be going all the way to the governor.

27. Those in the upper class have a different morality than we do in the lower classes.
They have what I call class-sociopathy. They honestly dont understand why we wont just capitulate like our class should.

Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 03:03 AM by truedelphi
They turn to us and say, "I am truly sorry for being blind to what is going on. I am with you and will work with you on this."

Nine times out of ten, when someone in a position of power resigns they are replaced by someone very much like them. So what we need is for those in power TO HAVE A CHANGE OF HEART, and vision.

21. Yes, changing hearts/minds is the goal. Nonviolence is not focused on punishment.
Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 05:30 AM by Dover
The roots of nonviolence is compassion and a recognition of ourselves in others. There is a peace in this acceptance.

By shining a light on her leadership, or lack thereof, it may be decided that she should step down. I'm not
suggesting that this would be inappropriate or unjustified. All I'm saying is that our intentions are important
and if we only want revenge and punishment then we are replicating rather than changing the systemic problems
of the status quo...continuing the cycle.
What I'm talking about is the inner place from which we express nonviolence. If we use it as a technique/weapon/tool focused on
revenge or manipulation then I would not call it nonviolence. It is then simply passive aggression.

Dalai Lama says -

"The true expression of non-violence is compassion.

Compassion compels us to reach out to all living beings, including our so-called enemies, those people who upset or hurt us. Irrespective of what they do to you, if you remember that all beings like you are only trying to be happy, you will find it much easier to develop compassion towards them. Usually your sense of compassion is limited and biased. We extend such feelings only towards our family and friends or those who are helpful to us. People we perceive as enemies and others to whom we are indifferent are excluded from our concern. That is not genuine compassion. True compassion is universal in scope. It is accompanied by a feeling of responsibility. To act altruistically, concerned only for the welfare of others, with no selfish or ulterior motives, is to affirm a sense of universal responsibility.

19. I'm surprised she even walks to her car
At my school, they're so arrogant they orange-cone all the close parking spots. Half the time they stay empty--a testimony to what time they show up for their job, if they even do.

Anyway, the silly bitch needs to go. Transformation? Yeah, the best transformation for her is losing her 400k a year salary. That will transform her real fast.

23. Gandhi: Soul Force is Matchless
"Passive resistance, that is, Soul-force, is matchless. It is superior to the force of arms. How, then, can it be considered merely a weapon of the weak? Men who use physical force are strangers to the courage that is requisite in a passive resister . . ." Gandhi asked where is there courage in blowing up people? Whereas ""Passive resistance is an all-sided sword; it can be used anyhow; it blesses him who uses it and him against whom it is used. Without drawing a drop of blood, it produces far-reaching results."

26. Now we see "Love thy enemy" in practice. MLK preached it. It is far more powerful than force.
I hope we can all learn and practice this. I find the desire to fight back overwhelming. That is life. We don't know what will be. But we know what works.

31. Yes, and COURAGE, as you say
When I was growing up in Queens, what we then called "mace" was a common weapon. You could buy it in any little corner bodega, and people used it. A lot. Not as a "self-defense" weapon, but as a straight up weapon. I'd been maced several times just in the course of the normal urban warfare that was NYC in the late 80's and early 90's. It fucking hurts, and it chokes you. And it hurts.

Later, when I lived on the West Coast and was involved in direct action as part of the anti (really, alternative)-globalization protests, I had the chance to have my ass in the tear gas a few times. I also got the full pepper spray treatment once. It fucking hurts like a motherfucker. I don't know how else to convey it. You want to tear your face off. It hurts.

I know what it takes to sit there and take it, again and again. Those kids have brass balls and uteruses, or whatever you want to call it. Brass. Fucking gleaming courageous heroes. Reminds me of the old ee cummings:

Christ(of His mercy infinite)
i pray to see;and Olaf,too

preponderatingly because
unless statistics lie he was
more brave than me:more blond than you.
