Santorum: More Americans Need to Suffer in the Christian Tradition
Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum made some interesting comments during a Town Hall Meeting in Ottumwa, Iowa, Friday, November 18th. Santorum believes low-income Americans get too much government assistance and the solution to this crime of poverty is to suffer in the "Christian tradition."

Say What?

"If you're lower-income, you can qualify for Medicaid, you can qualify for food stamps, you can qualify for housing assistance." Santorum continued to say that suffering was "a part of life," "essential," "good for everyone," and most important, "the Christian tradition."

Yes, the young Republican that has provided much of Saturday Night's material since he entered the race believes that a person getting help with the basic necessities of life—food, housing, and medical care—is getting too much and needs to suffer more. This does back up his stance on taxes only going up for the middle class. After all, less money to fund social programs and help the needy would put more money into the pockets of the corporations funding his and his fellow candidates' own pockets.

Rick Grew Up in Subsidized Housing

The comment Santorum makes about housing assistance is interesting. Santorum grew up with his parents in Veterans housing, for employees that worked at the hospital. This housing was labeled subsidized because it was provided through the government or a non-profit organization. This benefit provided through his parents' employer and the government was just that, a benefit provided to his family that allowed his father to complete his education and helped his parents better provide for him.

So what is wrong with helping people who need it with basic necessities; is that not also a Christian tradition?

1. Suffering is good for the soul, so therefore...
Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 04:12 AM by Beartracks
... the GOP's plan is to personally cause as much suffering as they can for as many people as possible.

P.S. And for them to consider such an idea to be a Christian one is truly appalling.

25. Suffering is good, more suffering must be better!
Let's just torture people directly.

29. That's one of the reasons why I never wanted to be a Christian.
I suffered enough when I was a Catholic.

(Tortured by nuns for anything good or bad at 6.)

And I'm not the only one...

2. I'll score a point for him in the honesty column
As disgusting as I find what he says, at least he had the guts to come out and say what the others up there won't, but I'm certain they believe: people should have to suffer. Suffering is indeed a part of life. It is a part of life that I think it is every human's duty to help alleviate for others.

4. Oh, I think for most that's no problem. There is plenty to go around

without assclowns that think they must help it along. He has guts like Rush Limbaugh, (though not in such quantity), which I'm quite sure compares more to a malevolent and evil spirit than courage.

If he was worth anything as a human being he would work on providing opportunity. Instead he seems to revel in efforts to do the bare minimum or less because of some perverted notion that "suffering" is good for the soul (Isn't that what meth and crack provide? Should we welcome more meth into the family hour?).

Real honesty would be him coming out and saying he just flat doesn't care how much tragedy he brings, that the country and our people will be the poorer because of how he used his position, that there are evil people out there that will make him rich for it.

I'd also give him +1000 in the black, evil soul column.

3. You first, Rick
Lead by example. Give up your cushy government paycheck and all of the associated benefits. Show us how well you can support your family on a minimum wage job, no health insurance and no "entitlements". Let's see you suffer through a winter with inadequate heating, a bare pantry, threadbare clothes and no boots. Find out how much fun it is to go to work sick because you have no "sick days" and you'll get fired if you take time off (not that you could afford it anyway). Listen to the cries of your children as they go to bed hungry--again. Then tell us again how suffering is a noble Christian ideal we should all strive for.

You know when he refused to heal the leper, told the starving multitudes to go get jobs while he ate a fish sandwich, etc.

12. Well then Tricky Ricky, lead by example
Wear the hair shirt, scourge the flesh with self-flagellation; deny yourself food, water, warm clothing, shelter, industry, coin, health care, friendship, family...lead the faithful with true suffering of your own. Uh huh. Any minute now. We'll wait. :puke:

13. This is supply side Jesus crap
It's not "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." but rather, "Do unto others, then run." Hypocrisy reigns supreme in this bastardized version of Christianity.

17. According to this logic

it's the wealthy who haven't been doing their Christian duty.

The poor in this country hve already suffered enough, thanks.

We're ready for the rich to do their suffering for a little while...like with a tax increase.

and suffering.

Common in adults who only got attention from their parents when they did something as children that their parents didn't like.

Alas, so many Christians, so few Lions....*sigh*

Yet lil' Ricky squeals that the Google is being mean to him! I guess he hasn't suffered enough to turn the other cheek gracefully.
