HEADS UP! DU's Annual Blackbeard Flame-fest is two days away
The Battle of Ocracoke Inlet took place November 22, 1718.

The Spotswood apologists and detractors will be out in force.

Mostly it'll be people trying score current political points based on events that took place 293 years ago, along with some shills from the Hyde County Chamber of Commerce thrown in for good measure.

Arrrrrrrrgh!

They can keep the vilest of epithets between the warring parties off the board.

They'll make sure that the debate could only be rated Arrrr.

12. Will offenders be tombstoned or planked?
And will the category of "offenders" include people making rotten puns?

6. I think the recent documentary "On Stranger Tides" will relieve some of that nonsense
Since it corrects the historical record about Blackbeard's activities in the Caribbean well after both the battle where he supposedly died and Spotswood's own mysterious death.

7. Whose head was hanging off Maynard's ship if it wasn't Blackbeard?
Let me guess: Some poor bastard named Midgette.

Seems like that's the most popular Banker surname.

10. the only evidence that we have that that actually happened is this grainy photograph
Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 02:59 PM by fishwax
I'm not convinced the head is real, let alone actually Blackbeard's.

On edit: hopefully my pointing that out doesn't get this moved to the 9/11 forum. :eyes:

11. And I suppose the thousands of people that have seen the Flaming Ship of Ocracoke aren't credible?
Granted, they serve some strong stuff at Howard's Pub, but not that strong.

9. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead
(That battle would have had a different outcome if the Queen Anne's Revenge had torpedoes.)
