|
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/11/nascar_fans_boo_michelle_obama_during_event_honoring_troops.php?ref=fpnewsfeed_betaNASCAR fans booed Michelle Obama and Jill Biden at the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday.
Both the first lady and the vice president’s wife were there to honor military troops and their families and to call attention to companies who have made commitments to hire and train veterans and military spouses.
The Associated Press reports that drivers gave the duo a standing ovation during a pre-race meeting.<snip> There is video of the incident at the link..

|
NASCAR NATION....
they seem to me to celebrate their ignorance wear patriotism as a shield against reason cherry-pick what parts of the constitution they will insist upon obeying
I shouldn't stereotype but then again, stereotypes exist for a reason....

9. They have been relentlessly propagandized for forty or more years.. |
|
There is a vast network of radio stations that play right wing propaganda 24/7/365, there is a cable news channel specifically designed for propaganda..
I'm prime NASCAR demographic, I'm a gearhead geek and I live in traditionally NASCAR country, if I wasn't a contrarian jerk I'd be right there with them.
It's extremely difficult to break out of a really ingrained mindset like right wingers have (the left has the same issue, they just happen to be a bit more reality oriented), everyone they talk to, everything they listen to reinforces their beliefs.
I was always enough of an outsider that I never got the full bore hit of the groupthink but I see it in so many many people around me, even my own family, practically every conversation takes a stab at Obama at some point, it's really something, I have my own problems with him but they don't include thinking he's a Muslim Atheist Socialist Commie Gun Grabber..

13. I understand your position |
|
I was raised in the south and went bananas over hot rod and drag racing magazines in my pre-teen and teen years. College changed all that (except I still love drag racing)...I got dragged into reality in the late 60's and early 70's.
I feel guilty about stereotyping but damn it's tempting

|
"Good white folks, not colored, like that Obama woman." And yes, I have heard people in upstate NY say that exact thing. Scary as hell, that the ignorant are being celebrated and rejoiced by 1/2 of our country.

That's not all there is to it by any means.

It say both attended; it makes a false assertion that somehow that means both were booed. The NASCAR fans were booing Ms. Obama; Jill Biden is irrelevant to them.

16. Yes, the OP does say that. Here it is - "NASCAR fans booed..." |
|
"NASCAR fans booed Michelle Obama and Jill Biden at the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday"
Lifted right out of the OP. Notice the "and" in the sentence, between two names, following the verb 'booed'.

20. Can't say. I am not a "seer" (I think that's the word Granny Clampett of |
|
the Beverly Hillbillies used.)
They were there. They got booed. Those are the facts.

22. no, those are NOT the facts. |

Unless the reporters asked everyone booing who they booed, there is no basis for saying that they booed both Biden and Obama; they just made that shit up.

24. Or, unless the reporters asked everyone there what their views on the |
|
relevance of Ms Biden being there, can one really say with certainty "...Jill Biden is irrelevant to them..."?
The two were there, together, and got booed.

11. That must have been a real dilemma for the cheering crowd... |
|
when the co-grand marshall appearing with Mrs. Obama and Biden was white (a returning vet), and he had his black wife and biracial children standing on the podium alongside him.

And the only way you hear boo's is if you're listening for them. You know what I mean? It was not thunderous.
Plus, "drivers gave the duo a standing ovation". That matters.
