Top court upholds death penalty for Aum-cultist

Japan's Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence handed down by lower courts to a senior member of Aum Shinrikyo for sarin gas attacks carried out by the religious cult.

The ruling brings all Aum-related criminal trials to an end, after 16 years.

The defendant, Seiichi Endo, was charged with murder and other crimes.

A district and a high court had sentenced him to death for producing sarin gas used in the deadly 1995 attack on Tokyo subways and for his role in a 1994 sarin attack by the cult in Matsumoto City, central Japan.
