The UC Davis rally is underway, with students gathered on the quad carrying signs protesting tuition hikes and the pepper spray incident Friday. Here is an account of how events are unfolding:

Katehi to students: 'I'm here to apologize'

When Chancellor Linda Katehi took the stage at a rally of students held to protest last week's pepper-spraying by police she was apologetic.

"I'm here to apologize," said Katehi. "I really feel horrible for what happened on Friday."

She spoke only briefly and then walked away toward the administration building with a mob of media and students following her. The media fired questions, which she would not answer.

18. Given the likely union contract involved, she probably can't just outright fire him.

Most unionized public employees have a disciplinary
process that must be followed, no matter how egregious
the offense.

On the other hand, he *COULD* be immediately arrested
if some District Attorney would only file charges; that
would remove him from his job instantly.

4. She was the first one defending the officers!
Now she's sorry? She's only sorry that she's pissed off faculty, students and alumni alike - not to mention her own boss. That's what she's sorry about.

3. Too little, too late
You should have said this FIRST instead of trying to justify the actions of the police officers. No, instead, you defended them with some lame excuses until you had faculty, alumni and students howling for your resignation.

Now it's "I'm sorry and I feel badly"? You are sorry and you feel badly because you were shown to be a poor leader.

7. Straight from the "Responsibility without Consequences" Bush playbook
"I accept responsibility," said various Bushies over the years. And what happens as a result of that responsibility. Well, nothing. But they accepted responsibility.

10. She has shown she does not have the ability to protect
the people at that university. After watching the brutal attacks on protesters over the past several weeks, it was irresponsible to call in those cops.

Same goes for any mayor or other city official who did the same thing. Oakland comes to mind, Portland also.

NYC too. All of them need to resign. They deliberately placed the American people in danger and have no business being in such positions of responsibility.

Also, all cops involved in brutal attacks must be charged criminally, the Oakland cops who nearly killed two veterans especially. We are still waiting for them to be charged.

11. They shouldn't even give her a chance to resign
They should fire her immediately, because obviously she has very poor judgment. This protest was because not a week prior police were hitting students and faculty with batons, including yanking people out of the crowd by their hair. Both times she took up for the police officers brutal treatment.

13. No! You are there to try to save your ass.
You hope if you grovel and deflect blame they will keep you.

You are not a leader that I could or would put my faith in.

You have lost the faith of the students that you will consider their best interests. That doesn't mean you will agree to any and every demand. It does mean you will have a handle on those you are in charge of such as the police.

If students are badly out of line, you would suspend or expel them. You have the power to fire the police. They are UC-Davis police and not mercenaries who wandered off the streets. They acted like thugs and then lied about the situation by claiming they were in danger.. The only danger was a sudden wind blowing pepperspray back in their faces.
