they are so far removed from the reality of the common person that they haven't the foggiest notion as to what it's like down in the trenches.

It reminds me of WWI and how French and English generals would give outlandish orders to non-existing or massively unready battalions to attack the enemy.

As long as they were able to drink their tea and have their roast pork, they didn't give a shit about the soldiers.
