Hey!! Has anyone heard that Glen Beck said "Shoot them in the head"?!? |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-21-11 01:27 PM by Fly by night
Yeah. So have I.
At least three dozen times through OPs on the Greatest page in the last day or so.
It looks like the brain damage that afflicted the lead character in "Memento" has struck DU big time.
I agree that this was an important story -- the first ten times it was posted.
The DU admins ask us to check for duplicate posts for a reason.

Oh wait I think I have seen that like, 3 dozen times.
I have to say that the one thing that doesn't seem to work for me on DU is the search feature. Maybe I just don't know how to use it? Like, I don't know how to sort it to current things. If I'm about to post something and search on DU I come up with 900 links from 2004 or whatever.
Still, it's easy enough to eyeball something like this that has been posted SOOO many times! Hard to believe somebody would post it again AND OTHER PEOPLE REC IT AGAIN without having seen it.
PS (LOL re: "MEMENTO!")

I agree that the search feature could work better. But on this story, one has only to scroll down the "Greatest" page to catch at least a half dozen of these posts.
Thanks again for the dupe. You can dupe some of the people some of the time. But when it concerns Glen Beck, you just can't dupe enough here on DU, it seems.

|
Edited on Fri Jan-21-11 07:36 PM by Fly by night
... the three (at least) OPs on this topic that are on the Greatest page now (or the last time I looked.)
Maybe for people who only visit DU once a week, my comment would seem "sad". I don't spend all day here, but I do check the site once or twice a day. For the last week or more, there have been multiple OPs on the Greatest page on this topic, none of them adding anything new to the discussion and all of them operating to dilute any discussion of the issue.
As I said in the OP, I do believe this is an important story and perhaps the first ten OPs that made it to the Greatest page were useful. After that, it begins to look like there's nothing else on our minds. Don't know about you, but there are other issues of interest to me.
This morning, when I posted this OP, there were five OPs on the Greatest page on the topic, all of them written as if they were bringing news. None of them were. The point of my OP is to emphasize the value (and the courtesy) of taking a few minutes to check to see if what you're about to post has been posted before (at least that day), much less posted multiple times already that day and every day for the past week.
If this "Beck-shoot-head" story is truly news to you, let me be the first to wish you a Happy New Year. Thanks for commenting. I do appreciate it ;^)

In your world, maybe five is a lot. I don't know.
In your world, the "Beck-shoot-head" story may be news. I don't know.
In our DU world, "ignore" is a very useful tool. As far as I know, you may be the first to "ignore" me, after seven years here. That's fine with me.
Thanks again for kicking the thread. And once again, Happy New Year.

For the Italian signal to "B___ me," hold your hand, palm side down, thumb tucked under, right in front of your face. Then quickly thrust hand backwards, biting hand and shaking it a little.
Show some teeth...
:P Your helpful Gesture of the Day! (Which you probably learned all ready come to think of it...)
and what in the hell are you doing in the garden? It's 20 something degrees here 3 inches of snow trying to melt...i wanted to get in the garden too but I am sitting cozy next to heaters, fending off cats who wish to assist me in typing.
And I get the point there, FBN. I do wish folks would spend just a minute or two browsing the first few pages for identical posts. Kicking them and adding to those discussions is always a great idea rather than starting another thread on the same topic...
and I SWEAR I have been trying - for your sake - to limit my F' word usage...I am not so successful...

26. About to go unload another 100+ bags of leaves collected yesterday from Nashville ... |
|
... and then driven home in a raging snowstorm. Not much fun, I tell ya'.
I will finish collecting leaves on Monday when I have a doctor's appointment in Nashville. By that time, I will have collected about 2,000 bags of free, nutritious mulch/compost starter for the Garden.
This weather is really unbelieveable. I never thought I would say "no more snow!!" in Tennessee, but I'm saying it now. Burning through the firewood at an alarming pace, what with having to keep two woodstoves going all the time in the house (plus the occasional wood-fired sauna evening.)
However, I find it easier to warm up than to cool off here in our humid summers. I guess that Mother Nature is preparing me for a move back out west (I hope, I hope).
Re: my earlier comments on the "F" bomb. I really am a net nanny, aren't I? That is probably the best sign for me to get back in the Garden. My dogs and dormant blueberries don't care what I think about anything, as long as I love on 'em and keep 'em fed.
Thanks for the kick. Much appreciated. Y'all come.

I have acres of them awaiting my attention.
Daughter is doing very well at school, she has a position in her school's sustainability house now, so hopefully she can bring those ideas back to the farm. I've been thinking about her a lot since she was the one who brought me to DU. Her five brothers also all seem to be doing well, and I'm enjoying all the quiet...who knew? :)
I am researching rain catchment systems, while shopping yet another new well pump...replaced the car battery this week...gotta love Tennessee - only $57 installed...
I know what you mean about winter, and animals and the garden. They wait quietly for us while we rage on on the intertubes lol
Here's hoping for that job for you. :fistbump:

That one got 15 OPs on GD in less than 90 minutes (honestly). None of the OPs had more than one or two comments, prolly 'cause there were so many to choose from.
I remember because I posted a similar OP on the un-necessity of posting the same ole same ole OP topic every five minutes.
Yeah, that OP of mine got some of the same hostility as this one too.
Go figure.
Folks, I don't make the DU admin suggestions here re: avoiding dupe OPs.
I just try to abide by them.

Of course, if everyone who has posted their own "Beck-shoot-head" OP in the last few days un-recs this OP, I'm in double-digit negative numbers.
It appears to have been a nip-and-tuck battle between the recs and the un-recs all afternoon.
Thanks for your comments. And yes, I found the tattoo -- I have seen "Memento". Just can't remember what it's about. Maybe a few dozen people will start Memento OPs so I can remember (for a minute).

38. You have a point (see post #34 above). |
|
However, the DU admins have a point when they ask us to check for dupes before posting something the 349th time. I support their point, 'cause this Beck-shoot-head endless loop is just the latest example of a recurrent "issue" that reflects the demands on supporting and sustaining a community filled with "me too" egoists (including, most assuredly, myself).
I'm not an admin and I didn't create the suggestion. I do support it.
BTW, my Goddess doesn't care what we do on the internets. I suppose She has better things to do. But, again, thanks for commenting.

As I said in the OP, repeating the story is useful. Repeating it every half hour for more than a week seems both like overkill and like the new OPers aren't bothering to notice that several folks have posted the story directly above them (often within the same half hour). From the majority of the comments here, it appears other DUers have the same feeling.
To repeat: repeat OPs on the same (important) story are useful. Repeating the same story ad nauseum without any new information appears that OPers don't pay attention to what has already been posted and/or that they would rather start an entirely new OP than to comment on someone else's. It also appears that they ignore the suggestions we are all given here about avoiding duplicate posts.
In any event, thanks, Hannah, for your comment.
