A&E Sued over Filmed Police Killing of 7-Year-Old
A&E Sued over Filmed Police Killing of 7-Year-Old

Aiyana Stanley-Jones The relatives of a 7-year-old girl shot dead in May by Detroit police are suing the A&E Television Network, claiming its involvement in the raid on the family’s home played a part in the girl’s death.

Aiyana Stanley-Jones was shot once through the head after police mistakenly stormed her home searching for a shooting suspect who lived in the other unit of a duplex. The girl was asleep on the family couch when police tossed flash-bang grenade through a window. A Detroit police officer, Joseph Weekley, then fired the shot that killed Aiyana.

An A&E film crew tagged along on the raid for the show, “The First 48.” In its lawsuit, the family argues that the network’s show encouraged police to create “great video footage

Maybe we can end this nonsense of real-life law enforcement as entertainment.

3. +1,111,111,111,111. I'd love to see this suit become a major public stink.

May Aiyana's family prevail and then some. I want a VERY public apology from A&E muckety-mucks--to all of us.

6. Shouldn't there be criminal charges?
If A&E caused the death, then someone should go to jail. If they didn't cause the death, does the suit have any merit?

Has anyone been convicted in this case? Or is it still being investigated?

If A&E didn't cause the death, but just caused pain by filming, is this a cause for a suit?

I don't like the concept of "The First 48" or the filming of the shooting. But are they guilty of anything more than Julian Assange is? Both are journalism, sorta.

:hi:

9. Remember OJ?
He was innocent, right? But guilty in civil court.

11. yes, there should be...
but when Law Enforcement officers are a part of a crime, often the crime doesn't get reported or is downplayed. There is definitely cause for a Civil Suit, whether or not there has been a criminal investigation and what was decided, i don't know.

Julian Assange and A&E are playing two different roles here. Most likely becuase they have different motivations. I wouldn't call either of them Journalists. Maybe New Media representatives, Assange is more like a Gatekeeper and A&E Producers are Playwrights in this Security Theatre...

10. GOOD maybe this will curb some of the more insane reality show.
I'll admit my wife and I watch a couple like Ghost hunters BUT when you have live TV cameras during police raids there is something wrong with this countries mentality.

12. I dislike reality shows of this type as much as any of you, but ...
... to say the film crew is at fault for police misconduct is a very bad prescident. We're supposed to believe that trained police officers are not responsible for their own actions if they're being filmed?

13. Good. Everyone is going to "play to the camera" it's in our nature.
Lots of flash-bang and bullets, made for some "great" TV. And a dead little girl.
