Shocking footage emerges of Taliban stoning couple to death
Source: London Telegraph

The two people have been publicly stoned to death in Afghanistan's once peaceful north over an alleged love affair.
The alleged lovers, who were engaged to be married to other people, were arrested by the Taliban on the request of their families after they tried to elope.
The video shows a woman wearing a blue burkah buried up to her waist as a baying crowd hurl rocks at her head and body.

Tis why I'm so on the fence about us leaving Afghanistan. This is what women, gays and minorities have to look forward to.

10. Agree with that.
Some of these individuals (I don't want to swear on this site) on the video are obviously enjoying themselves.

If these people had their way they would drag us all back to the middle ages. It's probably a good thing they've never heard of hanging, drawing and quartering or they'd be doing that in public too.

7. There is a movie that depicts a stoning in gruesome detail,
called "The Stoning of Soraya M." I thought that because it was a movie I'd be okay watching it but I wasn't. There are people out there who have difficulty understanding just how barbaric a practice this is, or at the least they manage to put it out of their mind. I recommend they watch the movie.

11. I don't know, but I don't believe
that our little invasion can effect permanent change, and judging by the results in Iraq, I don't believe a massive invasion will do much in the long term either, if only because our goal over there has nothing to do with improving the lives of women. That would be just a side effect if it happens at all.

21. I don't advocate invading any country ever...
I was commenting on the excellent and powerful film you were referring to, it is a must see.

My heart breaks for women caught in these Islamic states, but change doesn't come form the US dropping bombs. As a result to our invasion of Iraq,it turned out to be a gift to Iran.

Fundamentalism in any form is horrible, particularly for woman ,gays or anyone else that doesn't fit into their world view.

I was thinking also of a post above where somebody wonders of we ought not stay in Afghanistan for humanitarian reasons, and didn't mean to imply that you were advocating war.

24. I was watching Democracy Now yesterday
Amy was talking to Harry Belafonte, he shared his experience of a trip he made to Afghanistan. He took a cab and had a conversation with the cab driver, (knowing full well a cab driver would have more wisdom than all the generals, governments put together.)
The cab driver told him that "we don't need bombs, troops and war, we need medicine, doctors ect"

How many millions could we save if we didn't continually feed the war machine. But unfortunately the military ind. complex is big business.
Such a depressing vicious cycle.

17. Grinning, laughing men hurling stones. The virtually blinded woman in her burka
desperately looking around trying to ... what? Heartbreaking.

And the young man about to be stoned does nothing to escape, fight back, run away... it's like his will is crushed.

Devastating to watch. Not for the faint hearted.

18. The Telegraph's description of the events may be a bit off.
This originally popped up several days ago. This was the story that came out when the video was first released:

Apparently the man was unmarried, but the young woman had been sold/promised to a much older man in exchange for about $9,000. The two fled to Pakistan a while back, where they were married. They didn't try to elope, they did elope.

Both families agreed to not punish the couple, and they got the village elders and their local mullah to agree that, because they were married and their familied accepted it, they hadn't broken any laws. They sent for the couple in Pakistan and lured them back with promises of forgiveness and love.

The couple was initially welcomed back into their village when they returned, but someone tipped off the local Taliban and they came and pulled them from their home the first night they returned. Two Taliban mullahs staged a 20 minute show trial, declared their marriage invalid because they didn't have permission because of their parents, and then sentenced them to death because they'd had sex. According to the Taliban mullahs, you can be executed for adultery even if you have sex DURING marriage, if the mullahs later declare that marriage invalid.

According to the original story, the stoners were Taliban fighters, and not the victims families or fellow villagers.

The two different spins are interesting. In the original story, the family forgave their children and they were killed by ruthless Taliban fighters. In the Telegraph version, the Afghani families and villagers themselves are the monsters.

36. If the story is true the couple was lured back home ...
then the moral is, if you want to elope under those circumstances, go away and stay FAR FAR away from home. you can't go home again. Ever.

25. Afghan police pledge justice for Taliban stoning (BBC | 26 January)
26 January 2011 Last updated at 20:16 ET
By Quentin Sommerville BBC News, Kabul

... After viewing the footage, regional police chief Gen Daoud Daoud said those responsible could be recognised.

"Special police investigators will be sent there, we will find them and they will be brought to justice," he told the BBC.

A mobile phone recording of the killings has only just been seen by Afghan and Nato officials. Most of the video is too graphic to be shown ...

Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 06:32 PM by Hannah Bell
that video is interesting for what we don't see.

we see a person covered in blue in a pit & people clicking stones together,

then rocks hitting a pile of fabric.

why didn't they film the rocks knocking the person down. why the edits?

same with the man.

not to mention, no indication of how the video was obtained. or who obtained it.
