HuffPo: We Want Our Al Jazeera English *Now*
Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 03:56 PM by Turborama

What the Gulf War was to CNN, the people's revolutions of the Middle East are to http://english.aljazeera.net/">Al Jazeera English. But in the U.S., in a sad vestige of the era of Freedom Fries, hardly anyone can watch the channel on cable TV.

Cable companies: Add Al Jazeera English NOW!

It is downright un-American to still refuse to carry it. Vital, world-changing news is occurring in the Middle East and no one--not the xenophobic or celebrity-obsessed or cut-to-the-bone American media--can bring the perspective, insight, and on-the-scene reporting Al Jazeera English can.

Yes, we can watch AJE on the internet. But as much of an internet triumphalist as I am, internet streaming is not going to have the same impact--political and education impact--that putting AJE on the cable dial would have. I can watch AJE in the Zurich hotel room where I am now; I want to be able to watch it on my couch at home.

So call your cable company. Tweet your demand (#WeWantOurAJE). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh94FG5Q_j8">Write a song and make a video about it. We want our Al Jazeera English.

From: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-jarvis/we-want-our-al-jazeera-en_b_815968.html

Al Jazeera English have set up a website called "I Want Al Jazeera English" to help Americans petition their cable providers to supply them with Al Jazeera English.

It's a short and sweet link so it's easy to pass around, too.

http://iwantaje.com/

In the meantime, they do upload all their http://www.youtube.com/user/AlJazeeraEnglish#g/p">shows & http://www.youtube.com/user/AlJazeeraEnglish#g/u">news reports to YouTube and http://english.aljazeera.net/video/">their website. As most have found out by now, they also broadcast live 24/7 free here: http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now /

(The image in my link takes you to their live stream, too)

1. Hell, all the other networks refer to Al J and credit them as a source.
Maybe because they're not an American-owned business and the powers that be don't want an interloper enticing their viewers?

11. Hmmm. well there goes that argument. I'm sure it couldn't be because
it's known as a "Muslim Middle East Terrorist" station, could it?

14. Remember Don Rumsfeld bombed their Iraq bureau 2x
because they were reporting his atrocities accurately? And the Bush Junta wanted to bomb their HQ!

We're still suffering the effects of 8 years of those criminals. :grr:

I totally agree we're still suffering from what those despicable slimes did. :grr:

29. Good stuff - thanks! And I automatically tried to Rec them. I'm
SCREAMING about this:

One idiot said during a discussion leading up to the invasion, "It won't be like Vietnam, there's no jungle in Iraq".

I kid you not.

32. Thanks for trying, it's the thought that counts :-)
Yeah, it was a comment that was so stupid I'll never forget it. I knew at the time (it was even before the troops started building up on the border) that it was one of the most stupid things I'll ever read/hear in my life.

6. Their broadcast this past week puts our cable news to shame...
It's been a tutorial on how to present information - multiple interviews, multiple perspectives, very little to no spin, and shifting news anchors so if there would be spin, that news person was replaced with someone else a few hours later anyway...

Much like news used to be in this country before the corporations took over and demanded it be market-driven.

22. Also, have you noticed how few ad breaks there are?
And they're only about a minute long and the ads just let you know what shows are on and when.

21. I got rid of it years ago, and don't miss it.
I guess it depends on how much you need or want to watch television. I never watched it that much, but I was paying a lot of bucks to have access to a few shows that I wanted to see. I had a really expensive cable package because I wanted HBO so I could watch Bill Maher's show, and Showtime to watch 'Weeds'.

I concluded that it wasn't worth the money, considering how little TV I watched. I got rid of the TV and Comcast cable. I can get the content I want via the Internet, so I don't miss the cable TV at all.

12. political and "education" impact?
"Yes, we can watch AJE on the internet. But as much of an internet triumphalist as I am, internet streaming is not going to have the same impact--political and education impact--that putting AJE on the cable dial would have."

Sounds like: "Being able to watch AJE myself is not good enough. I want OTHER people to watch AJE."

26. 127.05%
Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 05:23 PM by Turborama
That's the Per Capita Income as % of USA.

There isn't same disparity of wealth that the other Arab countries (or Americans) are having to put up with.

Have you guys watched any of their "It Happened In..." Series? It is amazing. You can find them on You Tube. And they are very informative and aren't slanted at all. They present the facts and don't dumb it down or fill it full of bullshit opinion.
