Bill O'Reilly's video response to people questioning his previous comments on tides.
Earlier this month Bill O told David Silverman, the head of American Atheists, that he knows god exists because of the tides.

O’Reilly: Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that. You can't explain why the tide goes in...
Silverman: Tide goes in, tide goes out...?
O’Reilly: Yeah, see, the water — the tide comes in and it goes out, Mr. Silverman. It always goes in...
...
O’Reilly: No no, but you can’t explain that... you can’t explain it...
...

People responded to this statement with explanations.

Little did they know that Mr. Bill had a dazzling repartee ready to confound their pitiful use of science to explain the tides.

He posted his reply on YouTube. Take a look and be blinded at the searing logic that he is able to command.

4. here, i'll give it a try...
"ok, all you pinheads who jumped on me about this... how'd the moon get here? how'd the sun get here? how'd i get here? you can't answer those extra questions, so clearly your objection to my ignorant statements about the tides, and in fact any appeal to science as a way to rebut my idiotic rhetoric on any matter whatsoever, are baseless."

my bill is in the mail. :D

5. from the youtube page:

Colbert: "Like all great theologies, Bill's can be boiled down to one sentence: There must be a god, because I don't know how things work."

"How'd the moon get there?"
"Why doesn't mars have one?"
"Why isn't there life on Mars? Were we just lucky?"
"It takes more faith not to believe... than to believe in a deity."

6. All right. Here's a summary.
But his presentation is part of the effect.

David
Beverly Hills, FL writes in:

What do you mean when you refer to the tides when you are asked abou the existence of God? Science explains the tides... the moon's gravity pulls on the oceans.

OK, How'd the moon get there?
Look, you pinheads who attack me for this, you guys are just desperate.
How'd the moon get here? How'd the sun get there?
How'd it get there? Can you explain it to me?
How come we have that and Mars doesn't have it?
Venus doesn't have it. How come?
Why not? How'd it get here?
How'd that little amoeba get here, crawl out there?
How'd it do it? Come on.
You have order in the universe, the tide goes in, the tide goes out.
The moon does it. Fine.
How'd it get here?

etc.

7. How'd It Get There? Easy: The Big Bang
Edited on Mon Jan-31-11 02:56 AM by ChoppinBroccoli
The moon is just another piece of cosmic flotsam spread across the universe by the Big Bang and held in place by the gravitational pull of the Earth. See, Bill? Big Bang (science) and gravity (science)? At no point in that explanation did I have to resort to an invisible man who lives in the sky creating them out of his eye-boogers or whatever and holding them in place with magic.

Oh, and Bill? Strike two. Mars has TWO moons. Phobos and Deimos.

And even if we accept your statement that there is no life on Mars (although SCIENCE is now discovering that there may be or may have been), it's not because the invisible man in the sky didn't WANT it that way, it's because 1) it's entirely too cold, 2) there's no atmosphere and therefore no breathable air, and 3) there's no frickin' water. Once again, Bill, SCIENCE crushes your little web of superstitions.

9. Yea! And Before it Banged, where did the pre-bang come from??
What is he trying to prove anyway? Intelligent "design"? Evolution is intelligent, it's fucking brilliant!

As a kid in Catholic School, Evolution was just accepted as another example of the great works of God.
I really don't get the point.

11. Here is a concept that will twist his shorts in a knot
it came from the "absolute elsewhere". It is a fascinating concept in that space and time came into existence with the big bang the "absolute elsewhere" is a concept / dimension where space and time do not exist and are not relevant, it "is" every place and nowhere, and "exists" at every time and no time.

The big bang did not expand into empty space, because at each moment, even now, it defines the limit of space and time. There is nothing "before" the big bang as time and space came into existence at that moment.

O'Rielly should watch Nova or Discovery Science, they occasionally explain this sort of thing, as best they can.

He falls into a logic trap, because if God created reality and nature exactly as we find it, then there is no observable thing about reality that is relevant to the question of God's existence. However, an famous entomologist did once commented that; if God created nature exactly as we find it; we can be clear about one thing, he or she had a true love and fascination with beetles. There are literally millions of different beetles of every imaginable color and configuration, and the more places we look, the more we find.
