The Blizzard of 2011
Still waiting in Chicago. I'm watching the news, and they are frothing at the mouth showing pictures of sleet getting blown back in the air by unexceptional gusts of wind. Nothing to get excited about at this point despite the hype and misleading imagery. Real snow flakes fell for about 1/2 around 2:30, but it's been steady sleet. The worst was to hit at 3pm, then 6pm, now maybe midnight...???

How's the blizzard of 2011 treating you?

1. Downstate Knox County
Snow blowing straight across, drifting and roads closing. So far 4-5 inches, 12 more to come. Looks like the big green and yellow blob is at your doorstep.

The most we've had in one dump is 5 inches and there's not been an accumulative effect.

Good luck to you, Brooklyn. The ice is the worst of it by far.

Still waiting as well. Had about a half a foot last night and nothing all day. It is a different world up here. School doesn't get canceled just because we get a foot of snow. It usually takes a couple feet. The folks in these parts know how to deal with snow.

9. I nearly got swallowed up driving to Buffalo at Xmas 1998
Holy crap! Now that is a blizzard. I pulled off the road to get a hotel room, then realized my car would be under 13' of snow if I stopped moving. I had never been there before, and all of the interstates were closed. A bunch of us just played follow the leader, puttering through back roads, close enough to see the tail lights in front of us. If the lead car drove into the lake, we all would have followed him in.

I believe it. I am not from here, so when we first moved here it was a complete shock. People really do learn to adapt. It is quite amazing. We get a few inches most nights and most winters you don't see grass from November until March!!

starting to get a little snow but it isn't a blizzard yet

I am starting work at 2:30am (snow removal) and I expect to work until 6:00pm or so, then back at it again tomorrow night to touch up before morning.

Not gonna be fun but these things happen

I watched Chicago Works episode that detailed the snow removal situation room. Massive undertaking--we've got an fleet of trucks the size of an army--but incredibly efficient.

26. I am not on that big a scale
I work for a landscape company and we are running 6 plow trucks, 2 snowblower trucks and a salt truck

that is it

Mostly people's homes but we have some businesses and some schools (which will be closed tomorrow)

We also do the "Detroit People Mover" stations and that is my headache, along with 2 homes, 1 business, 1 school and 1 church. (everything is the area is mine)

It may not be as bad as we thought. Local news says most of the snow will have fallen by early afternoon. If this slows down by 1:00pm or so I can finish up by 6:00pm pretty easily.

We're supposed to get between 1/4" and 1/2" of ice. And our town is completely out of salt for the roads. I've taken a shower (hot water) already in case we lose power from tree branches hitting the electrial wires with all that ice.

Edited on Tue Feb-01-11 08:06 PM by walldude
I had to fly in here this morning and after all the hype and noise I thought "no way" but it wasn't a problem. We ended up with maybe 3 inches of snow... Nothing for us... However temperatures will stay well below zero. Usually it takes a foot or two of snow here before they close the schools but they were closed today and closed again tomorrow because of the temperature. Supposed to be -12 tonight. They say they can't get the buses running...

I've been in Canada the past week, pretty damn cold there too mostly in the negatives. I woner when the first moron will shout "See there's no global warming"!

Someone on a tennis forum pulled out that "What happened to Global Warming?"

I told her...

It's unfortunate terminology, because Americans like everything summed up in 4 words or less. But since opponents of the phenomenon are gaining support because they are repeating your 4 words, the scientific community has had to come up with 2 words that better explain the phenomenon: "Climate Change." Climate change describes perfectly what we are seeing: record cold, record heat, record snow, record rain, record drought, record hurricane, etc..

I'm about 30 miles out of KC. At one point this afternoon, we had swirling snow that resembled a mini tornado. The snow was actually rotating.

28. Finally the snow has passed here in Kansas City. Due to the wind gusts....
it is hard to determine exactly how much snow we got. On the top of my car is maybe 1/2 inch just because it's been blowing so much but there are spots on our back deck that are well over 12". I had to shovel a path for my dog to get down to the yard from the deck to take care of her business. :)

Glad the snow is done. All we have left here is wind and freezing cold temps for the next few days. good luck to you!

32. Dallas: almost no snow, but pretty bad ice
Ice shuts down Texas SO fast. It stayed in the 20s today which meant very little melting. It's very thick around my house. And covered with about 1/2 inch of snow. Most of the major school districts in DFW have already cancelled school for tomorrow after being cancelled today. I've lived in dallas a long time and can't remember 2 consecutive snow/ice days.
It does seem worse than usual though. The few people I know who've driven around today said it was really bad. Usually when there's an ice storm by midday everyone says it's not too bad.

...the worst winter I've ever lived through: winter of 2008
It was so cold it hurt and my radiator heat was no match for it  Because 2006 was unusually cold, and 2007 was colder, by winter 2008 I was ready to pack up and move back to my native California, something I'd never considered in my 20 years here.

Took these from my deck. The winter was long and the cold was relentless.

I went to bed around 10:00pm last night because it didn't look like the bid dump would hit until midnight. Woke up this morning and peeped out the window at my truck to see the bed filled to the top. The snow was dry and accompanied by wind, so the tops of the cars are clean and the truck's bed perfectly level. When the consistency of the snow is heavy, it will pile up on the cars several inches. On the other hand, the wind has created large snow drifts here and there that turn 12" of snow into 3' here and there. I live near a snow route and I see people are already driving down the streets at 7am. I street-park on an unplowed street, so I won't be able to move.

I should add, it's beautiful this a.m. Can see blue in the sky.
