Today I saw a cargo plane flying low and it was tilted on it's side

It scared the crap out of me when I saw it. It turns out MacDill Air force Base was conducting military exercises. I hope I never see something like that again.

1. I was playing golf one day when an air show was going on.

We made our t-time intentionally to take advantage of it. The course is right by the airport. One of the real big transports came over us and that was really freaky. It looked like it was going too slow to stay up there. I know it was coming in with it's flaps down and had plenty of lift, but still..
Then later we were playing a par three down in a little canyon. With no warning a pair of F-18's came screaming over us! What a rush! It seemed like you didn't even hear them until they were gone. If they dropped bombs on someone in a situation like that you wouldn't even have a chance to dive behind a rock.
We did that every year until they stopped having them here. It was never as cool as the first one though.

3. Had a pair of F-111s fly over our little country town out of the blue once.

Maybe 3-5 seconds warning that SOMETHING was coming. A shriek and a rumble off into the distance. Couldn't estimate an altitude but certainly low enough for me to see its "bits".

Far more fun for a couple of todlers was a couple of hundred Tigermoths droning past for 1/2 an hour or more.

2. I live near Youngstown Vienna Airport (YNG)

The NG has a C-130 base ther, and I live on the traffic pattern so they fly over below 1,000' AGL. We see that 3 times a day. They've been around for decades, so it doesn't bother me anymore because ther've been other guard planes flying from there since I was born.


As if our main tourist attraction, "Mosquito Lake" (really) isn't discouraging enough, realtors try to show homes in mid afternoon so the Hercules aren't leaving or returning home while the buyer is there. Someday one of the student pilots is going to screw up a landing and cut a swath through the neighborhood 165 feet wide and 1,000 feet long. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortland,_Ohio

4. During 9/11 when flights

were grounded, we had fighters flying over often. Scary.

5. I got C-5a's flying over my house looks like they are on strings.

6. Used to be real common for military planes to fly over while breaking the Sound Barrier

They would crack a pane of glass occasionally and scare the shit out of us but we could never see them.

During the 60's this was almost a daily occurrence.
