The conflicts have been going on for many hours now. Hundreds injured already. The protesters have been holding off the attackers all this while on side-streets, while the Square has been calm.

3. It was something earlier

a woman was reporting that peaceful protesters were not being able to leave Tariq Square and that pro-Mubarek thugs were keeping them there and forcing the fighting.

4. not a new tactic.. The Spaniards used it against the Aztecs & Mayans

and to some degree the Alamo was also a "kettle"..

lure your enemy into one area, corral them.. not that unusual.

6. Recently happened to schoolchildren in England

Took a bunch of kids who were barely politically aware and actually considered rather apathetic and turned them into the new generation of English activists. Short term, I guess kettling them worked but it sure backfired in the long run.
