Fox's Kelly Absurdly Claims Fox Personalities Do Not Invoke Nazis
January 20, 2011 4:51 pm ET — 158 Comments

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly responded to her guest's statement that Fox News figures regularly invoke Nazi imagery by stating: "I don't know if you sit and watch our programming every night, but I watch it every day and you're wrong." In fact, several Fox News figures, particularly Glenn Beck, have a long history of smearing President Obama, Democrats, and progressive figures by invoking Nazi and Holocaust imagery.

O'Reilly's Insipid Defense Of His 3-Year-Old Nazi Analogy
January 26, 2011 11:27 pm ET by Ned Resnikoff

A couple nights ago, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart mocked Fox News' sudden discovery that comparing your political opponents to Nazis is ridiculous and offensive. Tonight, Bill O'Reilly had the option of humbly conceding Stewart's point, ignoring it, or rationalizing his own abuse of Nazi analogies. Guess which one he went for?

That's right: O'Reilly defended comparing the Huffington Post to the Nazi Party on the basis that Stewart failed to provide the full context. And that context was: an insulting comment about Nancy Reagan.

Make that a deleted insulting comment. If you click on the relevant Huffington Post piece on Nancy Reagan, you'll see that all of the comments have been scrubbed. The nasty comment about Reagan has been immortalized solely in the right-wing blogosphere, including in an indignant column on BillOReilly.com.

Beck continues long history of invoking Nazis by comparing Fox to the Jews during the Holocaust
October 13, 2009 9:53 pm ET — 17 Comments

During the October 13 edition of his radio show, Glenn Beck likened the Obama administration's treatment of Fox News to Nazi persecution of Jews, telling other media outlets: "When they're done with Fox, and you decide to speak out on something," it would be like "he old, 'first they came for the Jews, and I wasn't Jewish.' " Beck has a long history of invoking the Holocaust, the Nazi Party, and Adolf Hitler to smear the Obama administration, other progressive individuals and organizations, and the media; indeed, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) previously criticized Beck for comparing Al Gore's efforts to raise awareness of global warming to the Holocaust.

Beck has repeatedly compared Obama to Hitler, claimed his policies are leading America toward Nazi Germany

"This is what Hitler did with the SS." Discussing Obama's call for a "civilian national security force" -- which was a reference to expanding the foreign service, AmeriCorps, and the Peace Corps -- Beck said on the August 27 edition of his Fox News program: "I'm finding this -- this is the hardest part to connect to. Because this is -- I mean, look, you know, David , what you just said is, you said, 'I'm not comparing' -- but you are. I mean, this is what Hitler did with the SS. He had his own people. He had the brownshirts and then the SS. This is what Saddam Hussein -- so -- but you are comparing that. And I -- I mean, I think America would have a really hard time getting their arms around that."

Beck: "I'm not comparing" Obama to Hitler, but asked his audience to "please read Mein Kampf" and learn from Germany's mistakes. On the August 12 broadcast of his radio show, discussing Obama's position on health care reform, Beck stated: "I am not comparing him to this, but please, read Mein Kampf for this reason. If you read it now, you see that Hitler told you what he was going to do. He told the Germans. It outsold the Bible. Germans read Mein Kampf, but what did they do? They didn't listen. 'Oh, he doesn't mean that.' 'Oh, he's just saying that to appeal to X, Y, Z.' All of the same lies we're telling to ourselves. 'No, that's crazy. Nobody would actually do that.' They buried their heads in the sand, and then it became too late. Please, America, take this man for what he says."

Does Beck Think His Comparison Of Progressive Tactics To Nazi Tactics Is Reasonable Discourse?
January 19, 2011 2:20 pm ET by Adam Shah

Today, Glenn Beck defended his repeated invocation of the Nazis while discussing progressives by saying: "I haven't compared progressives to Nazis, I have compared their tactics and what they do, and shown that it's the same kind of movement." I'm struggling to understand the distinction, especially when Beck says things like "the progressives here in America believe in national socialism" on more than one occasion.

But even taking Beck at his word that he means to compare progressive tactics to Nazi tactics rather than directly comparing progressives and Nazis, does this mean that Beck really thinks that this is a defensible part of the reasonable discourse in this country given that Nazi tactics include detention and execution of political opponents, use of paramilitary force, banning other political parties, and of course the systematic genocide of Jews.

Below the fold is a sampling of Beck's Nazi comparisons:

Fox News Radio's Tom Sullivan aired "side-by-side comparison" of speeches by Hitler and Obama
February 13, 2008 7:39 pm ET

SUMMARY: Fox News Radio host Tom Sullivan took a call from a listener who stated that when listening to Barack Obama speak, "it harkens back to when I was younger and I used to watch those deals with Hitler, how he would excite the crowd and they'd come to their feet and scream and yell." Sullivan then played a "side-by-side comparison" of a Hitler speech and an Obama speech. Sullivan mimicked the crowd during both speeches, yelling, "Yay! Yay!" When a later caller complained that Sullivan was "denigrating" Obama with the comparison, Sullivan said he wouldn't play it again, then begged: "Can I, please, one more time? Just one more time? Then I won't do it again. ... Until the next time."

O'Reilly compared Moore, Franken to Goebbels; compared Hollywood celebs to Nazi faithful
June 14, 2004 6:36 pm ET

One week after right-wing radio host Michael Savage compared progressive financier, philanthropist, and political activist George Soros to Hitler's minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, TV and radio host Bill O'Reilly compared both author/documentarian Michael Moore and radio host Al Franken to Goebbels. O'Reilly also likened a group of Hollywood celebrities who attended a recent premier of Moore's new film, Fahrenheit 9/11, to the Nazi faithful. In the process, O'Reilly falsely accused Franken of lying.

From the June 10 broadcast of The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly:

O'REILLY: Joseph Goebbels was the Minister of Propaganda for the Nazi regime and whose very famous quote was, "If you tell a lie long enough, it becomes the truth." All right? "If you tell a lie long enough, it becomes the truth."

And that's what Stuart Smalley {O'Reilly regularly refers to Franken as Stuart Smalley, a character Franken created on Saturday Night Live}, and Michael Moore and all of these guys do. They just run around.

Fox's "Nazi" rhetoric also comes straight from the top
November 18, 2010 10:48 am ET

In a recent interview, Fox News chairman Roger Ailes referred to National Public Radio executives as "Nazis" with a "Nazi attitude," and claimed "hey are the left wing of Nazism." Ailes' employees at Fox News, particularly Glenn Beck, have also used Nazi and Holocaust imagery to smear President Obama, Democrats, and progressive figures.
Ailes smears NPR executives as "the left wing of Nazism"

Ailes: NPR executives have a "Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism." In a recent Daily Beast interview with Howard Kurtz, Ailes called NPR "Nazis," adding "they have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism." From The Daily Beast:

The onetime Republican strategist is a man of strong opinions, in case that wasn't clear, and he also puts his money where his mouth is. When Juan Williams was fired by National Public Radio for remarks he made on Fox about fearing airplane passengers in Muslim garb, Ailes rushed to award him a three-year, $2 million contract.

<snip>

"They are, of course, Nazis. They have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don't want any other point of view. They don't even feel guilty using tax dollars to spout their propaganda. They are basically Air America with government funding to keep them alive."

Fox guest likened Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth to Nazi propaganda films
May 24, 2006 4:09 pm ET

On Fox News' Dayside, Sterling Burnett, senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis, called An Inconvenient Truth -- a new documentary on former Vice President Al Gore's campaign to raise worldwide awareness of global warming -- "propaganda" and added: "You don't go see Joseph Goebbels' films to see the truth about Nazi Germany. You don't want to go see Al Gore's film to see the truth about global warming."

Fox's Nazi fetish: Beck, O'Reilly, others repeatedly invoke Nazi imagery
October 18, 2010 6:13 pm ET — 118 Comments

Led by Glenn Beck -- who was once condemned by the Anti-Defamation League for saying Al Gore used "the same tactic" as Adolf Hitler -- Fox News personalities have frequently invoked Nazi Germany in their political commentary, often comparing progressives to Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, and the Nazi "brownshirts."

Fox's Kelly gives "hat tip" to birther, Obama-Hitler Youth comparing blog Gateway Pundit
September 02, 2009 3:20 pm ET — 21 Comments

On the September 2 edition of Fox News' America's Newsroom, co-host Megyn Kelly gave a "hat tip" to the blog Gateway Pundit, which Kelly said is where "we found" video of "a new effort to silence critics of the Democrats' plan." The Gateway Pundit blog has frequently pushed the conspiracy theory that President Obama doesn't have a valid birth certificate; speculated that Obama may instead be a Kenyan; and recently compared Obama's September 8 speech about "persisting and succeeding in school" to indoctrinating the Hitler Youth.

Doocy finds fault with "rude" Frank, not protester who compared Obama to Hitler
August 19, 2009 1:24 pm ET — 59 Comments

During the August 19 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy repeatedly defended a protester who claimed Rep. Barney Frank and President Obama support a "Nazi policy" on health care and held up a sign of Obama with a Hitler mustache. Doocy did not note the content of the protester's remarks, saying only that "somebody asked a question," and criticized Frank's response to the protester as "rude," giving "attitude," and demonstrating that he might spend "a little too much time in Washington, D.C., away from real people."

O'Reilly on Michael Moore's "power":
"his happened in Nazi Germany"
July 29, 2004 1:00 pm ET

On his July 28 FOX News Channel show, aired live from the Democratic National Convention, host Bill O'Reilly asserted that author/documentarian Michael Moore has "more power than probably anybody else other than Kerry and Edwards. ... You know this happened in Nazi Germany." And then O'Reilly once again compared Moore to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

From the July 28 edition of FOX News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor:

O'REILLY: I believe that he has power now. He has more power than probably anybody else other than Kerry and Edwards. It's scary. It's scary. You know this happened in Nazi Germany. ... Who was the most powerful person in Nazi Germany other than Hitler and Himmler and Goering, who? You guys know? ... Goebbels. The propaganda minister. That frightens me when truth no longer exists, gentlemen. It doesn't exist for Michael Moore, it doesn't.

As Media Matters for America documented, O'Reilly compared both Moore and radio host Al Franken to the Nazi progandist Goebbels on the June 10 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly.

January 20, 2011 9:58 pm ET — 34 Comments

Murdoch's denial belied by Fox News' repeated comparisons of Obama to Stalin
November 10, 2009 4:04 pm ET — 29 Comments

In an interview with Australia's Sky News, News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch falsely claimed that Fox News hosts had not "likened" President Obama to Josef Stalin. In fact, Fox News hosts and contributors have repeatedly drawn comparisons between Stalin and members of the Obama administration, including Obama himself, and have also compared Stalin's policies to Obama's policies.

The mistake of losing WWII, I'll assume. He doesn't seem to have a criticism for anything else they did.

BTW Glenny, do you really want all your listeners on some government watchlist?

Surreal doesn't begin to describe the state of the MSM. If I'd ever done acid, perhaps I'd have something to compare.
