U.S. Resume Controversial File-Sharing Domain Seizures (Updated) |
|
http://torrentfreak.com/us-resume-file-sharing-domain-seizures-110201/The DOJ and ICE are seizing domains? I'm a little fuzzy on why ICE would have anything to do with this. Regardless, it seems at least some of the sites being seized are not doing anything wrong. I'm interested to see if they end up having any recourse.

7. We've had ICE agents testifying in cases of child pornography... |
|
to the federal grand jury I'm on. They were well versed on filesharing, torrents, and whatnot. It was very surprising to see. Very educational.

11. I'm not sure that's completely true (From the story) |

US authorities have seized the domain of the hugely popular sports streaming and P2P download site Rojadirecta. The site, which is one of the most visited sites on the Internet, lost its .org domain which now redirects to a notice from DOJ/ICE. Rojadirecta is an unusual target because two courts in Spain have ruled that the site operates legally, and other than the .org domain the site has no links to the US.
snip
Rojadirecta is an unusual target for several reasons, not least because the site has been declared legal twice by Spanish courts. The site’s owners have previously fought a three year legal battle in Spain, which they won, but a single seizure warrant from US authorities has made this victory pointless.
Without receiving a notification or the option to defend themselves, the site’s domain was seized this morning.
************************************* The Justice Dept seizes a site that operates in Spain and has been ruled legal by the Spanish Courts.

12. I don't think it was being defended as a valid seizure |
|
Just explaining to me why ICE would be involved.

15. Well according to their site... |
|
This is their jurisdiction. It's not cyber crimes like I thought it was. It falls under National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Coordination Center http://www.ice.gov/iprcenter/

|
elected officials always lose their morals on the way on the way to D.C. if only they would lose their way, period.

These big corporations hardly pay taxes, yet the government pays out uncounted sums to protect their commercial property.

14. The NFL has become rather pathetic in its grab for cash |
|
You can't get the games here in Korea on Korean television because the NFL wants big bucks from the Sports Network that carries the games. Games that are played at 1 and 4 O'Clock in the morning on a Monday attracted almost no one when they were on four years ago (Armed Forces Network is an exception -- I don't get AFN) They'll let me buy the games on NFL.com, but I the region is blacked out -- I have US credit cards, so if I was stupid enough to pay for them I'd get nothing but the hassle of getting my money back They started their NFL network, which I guess isn't making the money they expected because it's one of the arguments the NFL is using against the players union to get more money in the new contract -- either that or they're lieing to the players and media

...for instance, at the Internet Archive---streaming concerts, public domain media works, legal original music---why does anyone want to file share?
