Brian Williams on the NBC Nightly News did a story on "Obamacare" this evening. |
|
The name of the legislation is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or the Patient Protection Act for short. Calling the act by the derisive, partisan name "Obamacare" perpetuates the deep misunderstanding of the act's content, provisions and purpose that exists among the irrational, know-nothing right. It is detrimental to the strength of Democratic and Progressive politics and candidates to allow supposed "journalists" to use the right-wing language of Dick Armey and Frank Luntz when reporting on policy issues.
I know that there are more than a few here on DU who vehemently object to the Patient Protection Act. Many here object to the legislation for what it doesn't do; i.e. it doesn't provide single-payer universal care for all Americans.
For me personally, first and foremost, the act prohibits insurance providers from denying coverage to minor children because of preexisting medical conditions. This provision has great significance to my family situation and I will resist dearly any attempt to repeal or amend it. There are arguably many good provision in the acts 8 titles, including patient protections, Medicaid reforms, support for the nursing and medical professions, significant improvements to systemic problems regarding accurate medical record and the delivery of quality health care, etc.
I'd like to urge anyone who feels the way I do about these matters to contact NBC Nightly News and ask that they use the more accurate name Patient Protection Act in future reporting.
Aloha.

5. Wow, a thread without a bunch of screw Obama posts. I think I'll stay here awhile. |
|
BTW -- I think there is a lot of good in HCR and some day "Obamacare" won't be a derisive term. I think a public option will be added relatively soon -- even the so-called Catfood Commission recommends that. Then, 80% of the criticism should disappear -- well, except for those that will dig to find something else to beach about.

9. I want the legislation to |

succeed as it is refined over the years and I want eventually to have a public option and I want it to end up being beloved by the citizens of this country and for it to be known as Obamacare. This will stick in the craws of the right forever.
