2. It's not just time

I don't think time is the only issue - I suspect a lot of those people simply couldn't tell that he was any good without the clue of being charged $100 to see him.

For his next stunt, I'd like to see either him, or a talented amateur, play behind an opaque curtain, and see how many people can hear the difference.
