One Man Was 100% Right About Everything Going On In Egypt: Russ Feingold
By Yashwanth Manjunath

<snip>

Back in July of 2010 one senator in the Democratic Party evaluated the volatile situation in Egypt with pinpoint accuracy. He used his knowledge to propose a Senate resolution calling on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to move toward more free and fair elections. I urge everyone to read the actual text http://www.foreignpolicy.com/files/fp_uploaded_documents/110202_plugin-BILLS-111sres586is.pdf of the resolution. It is not very long, and every word is spot on. My favorite part is when he mentioned that:

…authorities in Egypt continue to harass, intimidate, arbitrarily detain, and engage in violence against peaceful demonstrators, journalists, human rights activists, and bloggers…

Which is exactly what people all over the world are seeing with their own eyes since this revolution started. This prophetic senator’s name is Russ Feingold.

Kerry and McCain co-sponsored a resolution calling on Mubarak to step down.

2. They knew
http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20110131/cm_csm/359896

...Nobody could have anticipated such a speedily dramatic reaction to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's prescient warning in Qatar earlier this month that Arab states risked "sinking into the sand" if they did not clean up corruption and quicken their glacial pace of political and economic reform. Now the Obama administration must wrestle with cataclysmic changes of a pace it may not have foreseen, balancing the desire for the advance of democratic principles against concern lest the forces of Islamist extremism prosper.

Too bad the Democratic Party Leadership was too busy trying to save Anti-Labor Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas
to give Feingold much help in the last election.

26. Russ just posted this statement on Egypt

Notice it was
"Authorized and paid for by the Feingold Senate Committee | Daniel D. Hannula, Superior, WI, Treasurer"

Statement of Former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold on Egypt
February 4, 2011

"If there is anything to be learned from recent events in Egypt, it is that the United States must pursue a long term strategy with the country and people of Egypt and with other countries and people who live in that region.

"No longer can we as a nation look the other way when "stable" dictators sacrifice human rights and freedoms in the name of security. This is a recipe for failure. The United States must engage with the people of Egypt to understand the hopes they have for their country, and then the US can play a constructive role in helping Egypt achieve its goals.

"President Hosni Mubarak's extension of "emergency law" was wrong, but also merely a symptom of a government that had turned away from necessary political and democratic reforms--reforms which could have ensured the security and stability of that nation. I am pleased that President Obama has been direct and critical in his comments to President Mubarak, who should certainly step down and participate in a peaceful transition to a democratic civil society which respects the rule of law.

Feingold, who served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, authored S.Res. 586 in the 111th Congress, along with Senator John McCain, which called on Egypt's government to support democracy, human rights and civil liberties in that country.

30. I thank you for bringing this to my attention.... I had not read this... I did read his warning
about destabilizing Pakistan....".President Barack Obama is rightly focusing on this critical part of the world. But I cannot support an open-ended commitment to an escalating war in Afghanistan when the al Qaeda operatives we sought have largely been captured or killed or crossed the border to Pakistan.

Ending al Qaeda's safe haven in Pakistan is a top national security priority. Yet our operations in Afghanistan will not do so, and they could actually contribute to further destabilization of Pakistan. Meanwhile, we've become embroiled in a nation-building experiment that may distract us from combating al Qaeda and its affiliates, not just in Pakistan, but in Yemen, the Horn of Africa and other terrorist sanctuaries."http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203706604574376872733294910.html
