Weather Alert: Freezing Rain/Snow in San Antonio Texas
400 accidents reported so far; all highways being closed and it's supposed to continue through tomorrow morning.

I think I'm going to have a snow day tomorrow!

:wtf:

2. Yes - city spokesman says that many have been reported.
There looks to be about a 20 car pile up on a stretch of the highway (transguide camera). The cars have been sitting there for about an hour, not moving.

6. Not that I'm doubting the 400 number, but I do wonder
if the 20 car pile up is counted as one accident, or twenty. No matter how it's counted, that's a lot of accidents, even for how big/populous San Antonio is.

7. They count the number of calls to 911. From what I've seen on TV -
Edited on Fri Feb-04-11 12:33 AM by Avalux
the few cars still on the roads are crawling and a few have skidded sideways. One rolled down over the side of a road. This city just isn't prepared for these conditions and people don't know how to drive in it.

18. Thank you.
Even though some accidents will result in more than one 911 call, that's still a lot.

9. I heard the same thing from somewhere else
I don't doubt that number one bit. Unless you live in SA, you have no idea how horrible people are driving in snow and ice. It's ridiculous. That's why at the first hint of anything frozen, the whole town shuts down. People from up north are like, "you're kidding, right?" No they're not. People here are that bad!

16. Here in Austin they drive 70 and railgate when it's clear and dry
They drive 70 and tailgate when it's raining
and they try to drive 70 and tailgate when it's freezing wet.

And when they go into a skid the first thing you see is the brake lights coming on.

4. Wow - that's amazing.
It's been below 30 degrees for over two days now; this stuff isn't going anywhere.

5. Snow on super bowl weekend in Dallas would be hilarious

Maybe the billion dollar stadium's roof would collapse and ruin the monstrously large TV

8. There's snow and ice on the ground there now; it's bitterly cold.
By Sunday, all that should be gone since it will warm up. I did hear this morning that the showers in the Packer locker room ran out of hot water and they had to take cold showers.

11. Hmmm.....
People's safety & jobs are involved here.

While I think the whole hoopla of Superbowl is stupid. There are other factors involved.:

20. I should have taken safety into account, that is my bad

I don't want anyone to be hurt

It is just that warm weather locations tend to be picked for the Super Bowl just so snow can be avoided

21. Hey, I understand
but, part of the reasons that warm weather areas are at the top of the list is to avoid snow (and it's safety issues).

It really is just all about money, but there are other factors as well.

13. Dallas is getting snow now...maybe up to 5 inches
So much for the "only a dusting, maybe to an inch" prediction. Then it started coming down in a heavy way with huge, soft flakes and they go, eh, ok, maybe 3..maybe 5.
Then there was the comment made on Tuesday: "good thing this ice storm hit early in the week so it will all be cleared up by Friday and the weekend in time for people to arrive here OK".

That LOUD snicker sound you are hearing is Mother Nature giving the finger to Dallas forecasters.

Wonder how much $ the hotels who jacked their prices up 300% from Thursday thru Sunday will lose when their guests can't get here. Do they refund the money if people don't get here in time or say "you are S.O.L"?

15. Stay warm! It missed us here in south Houston -
some rain and it's cold ... so a bit icy in spots for the morning commute. That's it though - no snow or further accumulation. Expecting a high of 40 this afternoon so we should be clear soon.

Snow day for all the kids though - everyone called off yesterday so it's a 3-day weekend.

19. Freezing rain is the worst possible weather
anywhere. It's one thing to mock drivers in southern locations about not knowing how to drive in snow, but ice is totally treacherous no matter how much snow you're used to.

When I first moved to the Kansas City area, we'd regularly get five episodes of freezing rain each winter. Then climate change made it so every few years a major ice storm would occur. Still treacherous, at least not occurring as often.
