Student voted out of kindergarten class receives $350,000 settlement
Student voted out of kindergarten class receives $350,000 settlement

The case of Alex Barton, who was voted out of his Morningside Elementary kindergarten classroom three years ago, has officially ended with a $350,000 settlement.

U.S. District Judge Donald Graham approved the structured settlement and dismissed the case Wednesday, documents show.

About $150,000 of the money will be paid in a structured settlement, starting in 2020, when Alex Barton is 18, and continuing until 2032. The remaining $200,000 will be paid within 30 days.

The settlement is with the St. Lucie County School Board and the St. Lucie County School Classroom Teachers Association.

3. Gotta love the comments:
"I'm sorry to sound cold, but I'm sick of how much extra time and money we spend on these people who will never be a fully funtional member of society. It's redictulas, the kid was being a brat, I don't care if he was geniticly inclined to be a brat.

We must ask ourselfs, when our school systems can't afford to fully educate our normal students, why are we dumping so much money on teaching 16 years olds how to count to five and tye there shoes. Let's spend it on bringing the productive members up to par."

14. Me too!
Why would anyone want to cast them? Unless they are being cast in a new veggie play...

21. No, no, you are using the wrong definition. Cast like throw. They want to throw the
asparagus. Maybe at a Rocky Horror Picture Show play in lieu of a veggie play. Please tell me you've experienced a Rocky Horror Picture show.

30. No doubt!
I get resumes from ivy league grads that are so horrible we sometimes redact names and post them in the office as a warning... don't do this... and please don't hire this!

I figure there are some Ws out there with Poppy alumni pulling strings. I can't imagine how this could happen otherwise. Our receptionist has a far better command of the language.

8. That story is sad but you have to read the first comment at the bottom - irony alert!
"I'm sorry to sound cold, but I'm sick of how much extra time and money we spend on these people who will never be a fully funtional member of society. It's redictulas, the kid was being a brat, I don't care if he was geniticly inclined to be a brat.

15. In many of these cases the appeals go on for years and the settlements end up a lot less.
Like the Exxon Valdez and the lady burned by the McDonald's coffee.

And if the award stands, the wrong people are being punished.

24. I agree with the child's Mom that money can't take care of what
the district did to her family. BUT, it's not bad, the child will have some money for his education and
hopefully it will be through caring and TRAINED staff.
