Egyptian anti-government protesters sleep on the tires of a military tank stationed on Tahrir (Liberation) Square, which for the past two weeks has been the center of a sit-in protest by thousands of Egyptians demanding the government step down from power. Protesters created a human shield and barricades to fend off pro-Mubarak supporters from getting into the square and to prevent the military from an overnight attack to clear the square from the protesters.

Wael Ghoneim/Love letter to Egypt
Posted on February 7, 2011 by Sarah Carr

...

But I have stayed, and the thought of leaving always made me depressed. A friend (a doctor from Assiut who himself emigrated to the US, partly in despair at his future prospects in Egypt and strongly advised me to also get out) once challenged me to write a list of good things in Egypt. I tried, but they all seemed too personal, and stupid, or impossible to put in words. How do you describe indefatigable joy? How do you capture and convey spirit, spirit even in the cruelest sadness?

I’ve written on this blog about Egypt for five years now and I much of it is descriptions of injustice and tragedy, but I hope some of it has been the love letter to Egypt I meant it to be.

Tonight I watched Wael Ghoneim in a heart-breaking interview about his role in the uprising and the 12 days he spent in state security detention, and I felt vindicated. To be more accurate, I felt vindicated mid-afternoon on January 25th when thousands of us broke through security cordons and flooded into Tahrir Square and everything changed forever. And then again on Friday 28th when protestors fought and beat security bodies prepared to open fire on them while they were praying. And again last Wednesday, when protestors defended Tahrir Square from attacks by government-sponsored thugs for hours.

And I feel vindicated every time I enter Tahrir Square and find all the good in Egypt concentrated in one place. The day before yesterday I was standing on the wall which runs the perimeter of Tahrir’s grassy island watching men sing and dance. It was a tight squeeze and I was standing dead close to a middle-aged lady clapping and singing. She tapped me on the shoulder, I thought she wanted to say something to me so I leant over. She kissed me on the cheek and went back to watching.

Egypt: Sequence of Communication Shutdown During 2011 Uprise
25 January 2011 was the day when people of Egypt went to the streets in several cities to demonstrate against President Mubarak and the current regime.

Online platforms and social websites were highly utilized by activists to mobilize youth and spread the word before January 25. On the first of day of demonstrations, the government started to crackdown on communication and online platforms to limit the flow of information on what is happening and despite that crackdown, people of Egypt were still able to deliver videos, pictures and thoughts from the demonstrations all over Egypt and it didn't affect mobilizing people to join peaceful assemblies.

Among many different tactics activists used to spread the multimedia is building tents in Tahrir Square (Downtown, Cairo) and hanging a sign "Gathering Picture and Videos" to compile footage and pictures from demonstrators and uploading them online.

Here is the sequence of communication shutdown by the government starting 25 January:
    1. Tuesday 25 January 2011 - 01:30 pm: some mobile lines shutdown, twitter.com and bambuser.com blocked in Egypt.

    2. Tuesday 25 January 2011 - 08:0 pm: network coverage in Tahrir Square shutdown.

    3. Wednesday 26 January 2011: twitter.com & bambuser.com are accessible (10:30 pm), facebook.com is blocked, some mobile lines are re-activated,.

    4. Thursday 27 January 2011 - 09:40 pm: short message service (SMS) & internet connection shutdown (except one internet service provider where the government moved on it stock exchange and financials process).

    5. Friday 28 January 2011: landlines shutdown in some areas in Cairo, satellite internet connection is interrupted and mobile phone calls are re-activated.

    6. Monday 31 January 2011 - 11:30 pm: last internet service provider in Egypt shutdown.

    7. Wednesday 2 February - 2011, 12:30 pm: internet connection is re-activated.

    8. Sunday 6 February - 12:35 am: short message service re-activated.
You can check pictures here , videos here and here from the demonstrations in Cairo.

Blog post!! #Egypt: Revolution Pessoptimism http://bit.ly/gcq7O8 #Jan25 #Tahrir

...

Public opinion is very difficult to read. The population has, by and large, been extremely supportive of the demonstrators camped in Tahrir and other places, up until February 1st. On that evening the President gave a pathetic address about how he had served the country for godknowshowmany years, and wanted to end his presidential term. He played on people's emotional strings and it seemed to work.

More than anything though, he has also been playing quite a dirty media game - using all government and government-controlled channels and newspapers to paint the demonstrators in the worst possible light, tarnishing their great effort and essentially claiming that they are the root of all evil.
Economic slowdown? It's the demonstrators.
Police disappeared and thugs have taken control of the streets? Gotta be the demonstrators.
Countrywide curfew? Sure, their fault too.
Food and fuel shortages? Makes total sense that the demonstrators are guilty there too.

And people are buying it. People living in the vicinity of Tahrir square have been 'arresting' and robbing protestors or anyone they suspected of being one. Many of those, by the way, have gone to Tahrir square last Wednesday 2 Feb., to joined the government's hired thugs in beating up the peaceful (and pacifist) pro-change protestors.

...

Which brings me to Wael Ghonim's interview. The interview effectively swept, in one TV-minute, all the clutter that had been amassing atop the core issues: human, social and economic rights. Emergency law. The brutality of a police that opens fire on demonstrators. The blood shed and the lives lost.

...

<'The pessoptimist' was the title of a novel by Emile Habibi - if you haven't guessed, it's the contraction of 'pessimist' and 'optimist'.>

Send This To the General Prosecutor ASAP

If you are Egyptian or live in Egypt then please use this form and send it to the general prosecutor ASAP through Fax , we are asking the general prosecutor to open an investigation about minister of information Anas El-Fiky.

Anas El-Fiky is accused of spreading hate and lies in the society , yes we are accusing him of hate crime. His official media whether in TV or radio or newspaper accused us and the El-Tahrir protesters of being traitors working for Iran and Israel and even Mars for $ 50 and KFC meal !!

Anas El-Fiky is accused of spreading xenophobia in the Egyptian society jeopardizing the lives of foreigners including journalists and also the lives of blonde Egyptians to danger.

This form does not include this charge but I accuse him of wasting billions of dollars not even pounds from our taxes and also grants of European countries. No one understands where all that money went but we know our TV and radio need a lot of money.

61. Posted this earlier but I'm just getting to it now. Ramy Raoof
This is brilliant stuff!

Ramy's currently providing live video feeds out of Tahrir. http://bambuser.com/channel/RamyRaoof along with Tarek Shalaby http://bambuser.com/channel/tarekshalaby/

This kids put most of humanity to shame.

The Hopeful Network
Meet the young cyberactivists who've been planning Egypt's uprising for years.

One of the key activists within this movement is 24-year-old Ramy Raoof, the online media expert for Global Voices and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, two organizations devoted to documenting and sharing information on Egypt's democratic movement.

In September 2010, Raoof shared a digital guide with me that he had created to illustrate how protesters could use mobile phones and Twitter to communicate information about arrested activists, helping lawyers to secure the release of the detainees. Raoof was also well known for the "fixes" he devised for many of the challenges activists were facing, such as using international phone lines to text during government-imposed SMS shutdowns.

His efforts proved wildly successful. In the protests just before the November 2010 parliamentary elections, his team was able to secure the release of dozens of people from jails within hours of their arrest, sometimes by simply having a lawyer show up to dismiss unfounded and unchargeable offenses. In previous demonstrations, arrested protesters regularly disappeared into the prison system for weeks at a time, never having been charged, and emerging with horror stories of torture and significant injuries.

In addition to teaching activists about using technology to find new ways to organize, the election also taught them the power of new-media technologies to get out their message. That's where Bassem Samir comes in.

66. I didn't know that was the name of the page.
I knew it was a type of fan page for people offering their support, but didn't realize that was the title.

I just used Google Translate on it and came up with this:

أفوض وائل غنيم للتحدث بإسم ثوار مصر

"Authorize Wael Ghoneim to speak on behalf of rebels Egypt"

(Machine translations. Sigh.)
