So cold here this morning my outside CFL bulbs wouldn't fire |
|
-9 when I woke up at 5:00 am. Its a balmy -8 outside now. My dogs need to go out bad but I am afraid their paws will become injured from the cold. Going to give it a little while before I take them out.

2. CFLs go out in the cold? I have one outside and it's lasted several years. |

I live in northeastern Minnesota.

Not sure what the temperature range is on them? I recall reading it on the package but don't remember the low range? Whatever it is I hit it this morning.
Edit: I also think they will stay on even past the low rage if you get them turned on before the temperature drops. They just won't turn on under certain temperature.

8. Also, dogs can handle going out in below-zero weather to do their business. |

9. The good quality ones don't cut out in the cold as much |
|
You can buy special "low temperature" bulbs as well.

|
I have no experience with LED in cold, do they have a similar problem?

12. No. LED's should work at well below any temperature nature can give. |

It's the same temperature here and our dog spent her usual 1/2 hour outside running around.
Those pads are pretty tough. The only time you have to worry is when you get freezing rain followed by a hard freeze.

7. Rub 'em with a wool sock. |
|
Works here on the ones that konk out on me, at least down to -20F.
I do wonder why some do and some don't.

I plan on replacing the out side light on the porch with a 'real' light bulb when this one dies.

11. They are used extensively in Norway, Finland, Greenland and Iceland |
|
You just have to buy cold weather rated bulbs they cost a little more.

to go out for the paper. All I was looking at was the warm-up ahead and I missed that minus reading for this morning.
I can't wait for the tropical air that will be here this weekend.
