The Egyptian revolution will be hashed over by scholars and historians for years. What happened? Why? What triggered it?
It had many classic elements of revolution: A well educated, repressed middle class, a growing intelligentsia stirring up unrest, a widespread media reportage, and a trigger. But what triggered it? The final step in a classic revolution is a triggering event. Pundits are starting to speculate. It’s an important question because we learn from understanding.
Perhaps the revolution in Tunisia triggered it, but that’s kind of like the tail wagging the dog. Egypt is much larger. Clearly, the United States played this well. President Obama’s speech in Cairo a year ago is mentioned by many in the street as having and impact. Maybe, but I would class that as part of a broader awakening.
I heard one demonstrator proclaim, “Give me liberty or give me death!” That was interesting.
Also interesting was an absence of American flags burning. Obviously, the U. S. wasn’t the instigator of the revolution, but our close relations with the Egyptian military??? It will take a while to sort this out, but it will be fascinating.
