Debt Ceiling perception/lack of possible poltical strategy
Edited on Sat Feb-12-11 09:56 PM by HardWorkingDem
I have the perception that the majority of Americans do not understand the importance of this issue and it seems like the Washington Democrats, specifically the Obama administration, seem to be treating this issue and the explanation of this issue like how the bank bailout issue was discussed.

Also, it seems that with the lack of explanation of this issue, when the congressional vote is taken, the raising of the debt ceiling will happen, but the votes will barely be there and those not voting for it will be conservatives and Tea Party people, which will then allow them to hammer Democrats for voting to raise it.

Thoughts?

1. I kind of agree with this guy....
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

2. On its face, I do too, but.....
with Washington politics, I think the average American is not aware of what comes next and that at the end of the day, I'm wondering if the Rethugs will win the political part of it because it seems to me it is playing out just like the banking crisis and the craven Rethugs and Tea Party people will be able to claim that the Dems were able to pass this just because they want to keep spending the money of taxpayers.

3. After the compromise on the Bush tax-cut extensions...
I wouldn't be optimistic...
