Crooks & Liars: There were NO DEMOCRATS on yesterday's Sunday morning talk shows.
February 13, 2011 06:00 PM
I guess the media couldn't find any Democrats for their Sunday morning Talk shows

http://crooksandliars.com/john-amato/i-guess-media-couldnt-find-any-democrat

There was supposed to be one Democratic politician on, but Harry Reid got canceled because Face the Nation had to have John McCain back on one more time.

ABC's "This Week" - Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty

NBC's "Meet the Press" - Reps. John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Bobby Schilling, R-Ill.; Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

CBS' "Face the Nation" - Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.; Egyptian-American scholar and Nobel laureate Ahmed Zewail

"Fox News Sunday" - Gov. Haley Barbour, R-Miss.; Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

1. Corporate censorship, is it worse than government censorship?
At least I can vote the government out... kind of.

I have to buy my way out of corporate control.

2. We're back to the Bush-era panels...
At least back then they generally had the (still insufficient) excuse that, "well, the Republicans do hold the presidency and majorities in both the House and Senate..."

Wonder what excuse they'll come up with for today's bias?

3. I believe the main reason is Democrats just don't want to come forward.
Edited on Mon Feb-14-11 11:00 AM by Bandit
That IMO is the entire reason the Republicans walloped the Democrats in the last election. Democrats don't want to go on the talk shows and America will suffer for it.

4. Absolutely agree with this.....
I fluctuate back and forth on just why they don't want to go on the shows. In my more generous moments I think it's because they're more focused on actually legislating and doing their jobs than doing press. Those moments are rare, but even that semi-optimistic view makes me shake my head at their naivete that just legislating is enough and that the PR standpoint is not as important.

But in my more frequent, cynical and less generous moments I think it's because they are just afraid of anything and everyone. Afraid of having to defend what should be traditional democratic positions because it might piss off their wealthy, corporate donors. I just think they've spent the past couple of years trying to thread the needle between not pissing off their democratic constiuencies and not pissing off corporate and wealthy donors from whom they want pieces of the pie as well.

Either way, it stinks and I"m no longer just willing to chalk it up to being the fault of the media booking people. I think that's a part of it, but not the whole story.

9. We really never left Bush era panels.. why?
because out-of-office republicans NEVER LEAVE the stage. They leave office & cycle into "speakers' Bureaus, Think Tanks, DC Lobby outfits. These venues have 24-7-365 "publicity hacks" who spend all their time pushing their people at media types, who just happen to have lots of dead air to fill every day.

If you are a scheduler for a network, you can ALWAYS book any number of "guests", color-coded/pre-sexed/volume-leveled for their convenience.

Democrats have never even come close in the PR department.

We keep offering up the same old tired faces..Shrum (advisor to multiple LOSING campaigns) immediately comes to mind.

Republicans have an ever-increasing stable of newcomers, added to their old reliables and we keep offering up people who allow themselves to be overspoken, interrupted and flat out beaten up .

From the 80's on, we have been inundated with republicans, and it's not going to stop.

10. I would agree with you if this were the truth. It isn't. The Sunday after Barack Obama
won the White House in a landslide and the Democrats pounded the Republicans in both houses and in most state legislatures, the Sunday morning talk shows invited McCain, Boehner and a slew of Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats. It's what they have been doing for many, many years.

Don't believe me? Check Media Matters...

6. There's that liberal media for you.
Always stacking the deck towards their side. Good thing we have a fair and balanced news network to cancel that out.

7. And in spite of that disparity( which happens more often than we'd like)
a majority of the American people, when polled, can still show support for progressive ideas and programs.......I'm trying to see that glass half filled here.

Imagine if the media were truly balanced? AND a true progressive voice could get a chance to speak on a regular basis on on the networks - not just certain cable channels?

11. I imagine the corporate media must be trying to manipulate American Perception of the drive
for democracy in Egypt from one of hope and promise to a narrow, selfish, near sighted, fear based frame.

I gave up on watching Sunday morning talk shows a long time ago, but their patterns remain drearily, Groundhog Day consistent.

Thanks for the thread, Amerigo Vespucci.

15. by not allowing democrats on, the media makes the GOP more popular
Edited on Mon Feb-14-11 08:27 PM by fascisthunter
without there being anyone to counter their garbage. It's why so many believe FOX news is telling the truth... no one to counter them, well, not enough anyways.

For the cons, perception is everything.

20. Are Democrats not being allowed on, or are they just refusing?
Given how the media tends to handle having Dems on a panel...I wouldn't be surprised if they just didn't want to be on in the first place.
