CBS News' Lara Logan Hospitalized After Sexual Assault in Egypt
Logan Was Assaulted As Protesters Celebrated Mubarak's Decision to Quit
By RUSSELL GOLDMAN

CBS News correspondent Lara Logan was assaulted and sexually abused by an Egyptian crowd last week during the celebration of President Hosni Mubarak's decision to step aside.

Logan, a veteran foreign correspondent, was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for "60 Minutes" on Feb. 11 when "she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration," CBS News said in a statement published on their website today.

"In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers," read the statement.

Thousands of Egyptians swarmed Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the protests that night, and the crowds were generally peaceful. Soon after the assault Logan reconnected with her crew, "returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning," CBS said. On Tuesday, four days after the assault she was still "in the hospital recovering." ...

8. IIRC, there were tweets reporting that an unidentified female reporter
Edited on Tue Feb-15-11 06:27 PM by blondeatlast
had been assaulted posted on DU last week.

What "motives" would be behind holding the story?

about going public with this and needed time to decide.

30. There's no motives, it's for her privacy
In the carnage that happened, it wouldn't have been easy for her to be identified, and her crew would have shut up about it. Likely the only way any other news group would have found out, unless they were there, would be if she came forward.

i was following a pickup today that had a cowgirl, calling her a cow, naked ass with chaps saying something about not riding a horse ride cow (her). and another sticker about needing something to rub, rub this. a man in his fuckin 50's..

a society that creates all women as whores to be used by the sex obsessed, all that, male.

so god damn tired of it....

18. That is just horrible!
Rapists should have their cocks cut off with a dull, rusty butter knife... then have gasoline poured on the open wound and toss a match on it to "cautherize" it...

Fuckin' scumbags

Healing vibes to Ms Logan

19. She had been detained and kicked out of Egypt
and was just back.

Now, why would anyone celebrating Mubarak's ouster do such a thing? Beat a reporter? It sounds like government thugs to me.

24. Not necessarily
I have a good friend here in grad school with me who grew up in Egypt. It sounds like contempt and hatred for women runs deep and wide - and includes the young, educated men who were likely to against Mubarak. Non-Egyptian women in particular are viewed as "whores" to be used.

She is only half Arabic, and isn't Muslim (she was raised without any religion). The stories she tells about gender relations in that country chill my blood.

25. People at Tahrir were celebrating.
No protesters had any beef with reporters.

On the other hand, the regime had set thugs on reporters for a week and over 100 assaults on them have been recorded.

26. Ah...
So you think that because she was a reporter, she must have been attacked for being a reporter. Couldn't be just because she was there, and a woman, or a non-Egyptian woman.

Crowds usually don't make that much sense, old chum. Even if they did, the world doesn't split up into "good guys" and "bad guys." You can be against a regime which prevents you from getting a job, but still see women as sub-human toys to do with what you wish.

That is why a lot of us, while thrilled for the victory of the Egyptian people, are seriously worried about what happens next.

21. This is absolutely awful. Is more information known about who was involved?
The article said that she was surrounded by a "dangerous element" - what does that mean? It sounds as if she was surrounded by a large group of people, most if not all who knew what was going on, and she was beaten and gang raped. Gang rapes don't just "happen" spontaneously like that. It sounds like she was targeted for "punishment" by one group or another; almost certainly either linked to her being a woman, a reporter, or both. The article also states that she was detained by regime loyalists previously, and forced to leave the country. When she arrived in the United States she immediately returned to Cairo, and had just arrived on the 11th - the day the assault occurred.

Although I don't have much hope there will be "justice" for Lara, I very much hope the bastards suffer in some sort of way for what they did to her. I've very much enjoyed her reporting, and hope that she recovers from this incident as best as humanly possible. Then, I hope she spits in the face of what these bastards probably wanted - to silence her - and goes back out to do the job she so clearly loves.

Best wishes Lara. You're clearly a courageous and brave woman, and I have confidence that if anyone can overcome an ordeal like this, it is you.

31. Egypt is a HARD place to be a woman.
Friends I have who have ventured there have said it was awful, always being stared at, people trying to grope you...etc. I can't believe a mob of people could do this. In a group of men, not a handful of them could have done something?
