What if Mubarak is shot? Do you believe that he suddenly has cancer?
I've been pretty busy the past few days and haven't been on DU but have had a lot of time to think anyway. Do we know if Mubarak was injured, or worse, during the coup?

I mean, we know on Thursday he gave a live speech and looked entirely healthy, and said "hell no, I won't go". And then on Friday we get the word from his VP that Mubarak has 1. stepped down and 2. left the city immediately. We never hear from Mubarak again, and Suleiman disappears as well, and now it's the military in charge.

And what was it, 3 days later, Mubarak is critically ill with... cancer??!!

Anybody else pretty suspicious? I know that virtually all coups are violent to some degree, but did Mubarak get injured on Thursday night? Has anyone even tried "going there" with that possibility? I've been pretty upfront that I'm worried about the aftermath of the revolution - the vacuum left behind is dangerous in that region. But a violent overthrow has dire implications for the people on the streets imho.

1. He had surgery in Germany over a year ago--suspected cancer then...
Edited on Tue Feb-15-11 08:04 PM by hlthe2b
It was attributed to a gall bladder procedure and related. But, reporting had that he had cancer at the time.

So, no. I do not think it unfathomable in an 82 year old man with life as he knows it, clearly behind him. I certainly don't have much sympathy for Mubarak, but there is a modicum of compassion I still maintain for anyone who may be suffering from terminal cancer. We shall see either way...

2. Where did you hear he has cancer?
I've read a few reports that he may have collapsed but none of those sources claim that they can confirm Mubarak fell ill or is ill.

8. There have been many news reports out there.
Here's a link to a UPI story but you can google it and it's all over. I knew I'd heard it before (there are rumours he has a history of cancer anyway) but the news now is that it's back with a force.

10. UPI?
Relaying a report from the Washington Times?

Are you aware that both the Washington Times and United Press International are owned by Reverend Sun Myung Moon?

11. Sorry, there are a lot of sources out there. I picked the first one.

You can google it. There are a lot of others to choose from as well as DU.

ETA: Your comments make me wonder even more. The Rethugs did NOT want Obama to get behind the Tahrir Sq protestors. The good Rev is probably friends with the Saudi royals who were definitely NOT behind the protest movement.

So why the rumour he has cancer? Don't you think the whole thing is odd?

13. Your OP doesn't make sense
If, as you say in the above post, rumors of Mubarak having cancer have been floating around for a while, then his supposed relapse would seem pretty logical. How do you get that he's been shot and it's been covered up out of that?

15. Pretty conveeenient relapse if you ask me. 3+/- days after he abdicates?
And there's the weird timing of his speech coupled with his rapid disappearance.

I just think it's bizarre, and the least likely scenario imho.

4. He's too sick to be put to death...
We've heard that before.

I'd rather he lived anyway... in the hope that his conscious may some day be found and that it would cause him all the grief he is due.

5. Oh I agree. And I'm not even above suspecting him and Gamal of pulling a "Ken Lay"
and "dying" (cough) while slipping away under cover of plastic surgery. (I know it's an urban legend but hell, it's not implausible with 70 +/- billion dollars....

6. Seems like if he'd been shot, someone would claim credit.
But, yeah, I saw him myself on Thursday right there on my Tee Vee. He seemed to be okay then.

Something's fishy.

12. .. or what if they're just setting the stage for him to pull a Ken Lay ?
... and magically 'die' before he can be convicted/made to squeal?
