Madison schools close as teachers protest bill

Madison -- Madison schools will be closed Wednesday because 40% of their teachers have called in sick to protest a bill that would strip away their union rights.

"At this ratio we have serious concerns about our ability to maintain safe and secure school environments," said a statement from Dan Nerad, superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District. "Despite a substantial number of substitute teachers, there are not enough available teachers to come close to filling the need for Wednesday."

The closure was announced at 11 p.m., hours after the teachers union, Madison Teachers Inc., announced substantial numbers of teachers would skip school so they could lobby Republicans who control the Legislature to vote against the bill.

In Madison you don't have mostly poor minorities like in Milwaukee that you can run roughshod on...

Walker had it easy with all his rich white backers in the ethnic urban blue collar county of Milwaukee.
