3. I'd say Tom Tomorrow doesn't think much of Obama and Egypt
The president really did stay on the fence. I just hope the revolution doesn't fall apart under the military yoke.

6. Remember Tienanmen Square? And they own us now.
Remember the reports about China blocking the word "Egypt" from the Chinese internet?

They are bigger and more powerful than all of our pet dictators.

7. And just as an almost pure aside: I've been a follower of Middle East politics for...
...quite a while now, and I've focused on the relationship between the Israelis and the Palestinians because within that relationship there lies the crux of all that is wrong with our priorities, the speaking of democracy while supporting tyranny and so on and so on: Our relationship with Israel is quintessential U.S. foreign policy at its absolute worst.

And ho-boy do I bitch about it!

Israel sticks out like a sore thumb, attracts attention to itself, seems to invite scorn which seems to fuel some internal fire which they need as much as their adversaries in order to continue on.

But, really, while everyone knows about the atrocities, the theft, the dehumanization against the Palestinian people just pause for a moment and consider all of the much more substantial allies of the United States: Saudi Arabia, Egypt (until recently) and a whole alphabet soup of other countries which actually blow Israel out of the water when it comes to pure, naked tyranny and wanton destruction.

And they hardly receive any mention. We just...accept...Saudi Arabia, etc. Just accept the state of those countries and comment on them very little in relative comparison.

The Chinese, for example.

8. It's a question the world is finally asking.
'Why does the U.S. support dictators'? We never found one we didn't like and were willing to pay.

What I don't get is why we would not be far better off supporting free societies which are far more stable, as dictatorships inevitably fall. We have a lot to answer for. And the world knows well that if the Egyptian people had failed, we would still be supporting Mubarak.

This is a great comic strip, so sadly accurate.

10. We give money to many dictators, like Mubarak, Ben Ali
Karamov of Uzbekistan and anyone who will accomodate our 'interests' which seem to begin and end with OIL.

China is whole different story ~ what we gave them was legitimacy and business and we may one day regret that.

but for anyone wishing to study further, I recommend the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalmers_Johnson#The_Blowback_series">Blowback series by the late Chalmers Johnson.
