Another front in the assault to break the unions
"Bill OK'd to end collective bargaining with schools

"NASHVILLE — The Senate Education Committee voted along party lines Wednesday to abolish collective bargaining between teachers unions and school boards across the state.

The vote was 6-3, with all Republicans on the panel voting for the bill and all Democrats against.

Sponsor Sen. Jack Johnson said passage of the bill — SB113 — will remove 'an albatross from around the neck of our school boards across the state' and remove a roadblock to education reform."

The assault on unions, the assault on teachers, the assault on public education continues apace. If you know anybody in Tennessee, get them to contact their representatives.

With these ongoing assaults on education at the local, state and federal level, it frightens me to contemplate what public education is going to look like in twenty years. My wife works at a liberal arts college, and she has seen a marked difference over the past ten years in the quality of education that her students are walking in the door with, all from a decade of NCLB. Frightening to contemplate what our graduating students will be like when there are no quality teachers left, no quality public schools.

1. Wow, no comments on this yet?
I thought surely with all the interest in what's going on in Wisconsin that this would garner some as well. I guess not, after all, it's only teachers:eyes:

2. Despicable. What are the chances the bill will pass? If it were AZ,
I know it would be a sickening slam-dunk.

Good luck to my union brothers and sisters in Tennessee. Stand firm!

3. Perhaps a Tennessee DUer can give us a ray of hope,
But being that it is Tennessee, I think that it will pass handily.

4. Tennessee has been royally fucked for a long time. This outrage
is just one more little ripple in a big fetid swamp.

5. Oh I understand,
But I think that this is more than a little ripple. This is your kids' future at stake, because quite frankly no quality teacher is going to go to, or stay in Tennessee to teach once this passes.
