There is an amazing thing going on in Wisconsin. Is it the beginning of a movement?
The people decided they have had enough of the new republicanism of cutting pay and pensions and union busting.

They are revolting in WI and the corporate owned media is ignoring it.

Democratic members of the state Senate have walked out and the State Police refuse to arrest them.

This could be the start of the United States’, We the People revolt. If Egypt can have democracy, why cant we?

We are United Citizens against Citizen’s United and the corporate oligarchy.

Call and write you local TV stations and newspapers and tell them to cover this story.

1. Should we call on
unions in other states to rally behind us? To conduct demonstrations nation-wide to show that we know this is the national republican agenda and we won't stand for it?

22. I haven't heard anything about OH today
I understand a few states were planning to follow WI, but I've yet to see any coverage.

I hope this turns into a real movement, but I doubt it.

30. one of the problems of going to the legislature and throttling them in
person is that our state capital can only be reached by plane and boat. Its an ORDEAL to get there and when you are there its hell to get out especially in winter.

Yes to the idea of rallies, protests, whatever, in MANY OTHER LOCATIONS!

Get it rolling!

7. It can be if national labor officials and our allies get their asses in gear now.

This is a test of the competence and organizing ability of the AFL-CIO, Teamsters and SEIU leadership.

Will they pass it?

31. Meh. Egypt didn't have that organization.
We don't need it here.

It's 'helpful' - but not necessary.

We will see - can it catch on.

6. No.
Edited on Thu Feb-17-11 05:59 PM by Davis_X_Machina
There are people, not a majority, to be sure, but not a fringe either, who complain loudly about public-employee unions, the exorbitant pensions they've negotiated for their members, and about unions generally -- how they're corrupt, don't have the workers' interests at heart, and are ultimately unnecessary -- right here at DU.

If that's the case here, then there's zero chance of such a movement in the populace at large.

9. +1 Sadly true
There would have been a greater chance of a mass movement in 2006 during the MILLIONS strong Immigration marches, had all workers joined in. But again, American non-union workers and public employees saw no working class connection.

12. The tea-party movement is built upon jealousy.
Edited on Thu Feb-17-11 05:39 PM by HereSince1628
Walker stepped into the Governorship with tea-party support.

The tea-partiers are insecure and are jealous of immigrants, affirmative action, social programs, etc.
There are people on DU who also feel such jealousies, but they are a minority.

You can point at the ghost of Jimmy Hoffa, but you know, the ghost of Bobby Kennedy shook down the corruption of the Teamsters.

The realpolitik of 2011 is a war that involves the R's using EVERY tool they can find to finally DESTROY PRO-LABOR DEMOCRATS and they have succeeded in winning large swaths of 'NEW Democrats' and 'Third Way' democrats to the anti-labor side of the fight.

Wisconsin, Ohio and Tennessee have risen up and said NO! NO FUCKING WAY!!! The campaign is ON! What the R's just launched is not the equivalent of the Normandy invasion, but the attack is on AMERICANS. How is THAT just?

They're not representative of the political temperature of the country. I think this country is fertile ground for such a populist movement.

34. So what? The existence of idiots doesn't stop us from organizing, does it?
At all times there were people who thought in reactionary ways, that was never a reason not to organize.

Furthermore, your "zero chance" is clearly already wrong. That already is a movement in Wisconsin, a product of many prior movements (or there would not have been unions in the first place). The question is how big it can get and how wide it will spread.

11. Is this our summer of '09?
The main difference so far (besides the issues) is that the media loved covering the Tea Party and hates covering progressive movements. It doesn't seem to be slowing us down. I love how all it took were 2 or 3 people in one district and it made headline news, but 30,000+ show up for a protest and nary a peep.
