Cabbies asked to aid in search for donor for 3-year-old leukemia patient

Cabbies are on a drive to save the life of 3-year-old Rayan Sher.

Rayan was diagnosed with leukemia in December, and so far hasn’t found a bone marrow donor.

Part of the problem is that Rayan is Pakistani, and too few South Asian people have registered as bone marrow donors, said Katharina Harf, co-founder of DKMS Americas, a leukemia charity trying to find a bone marrow donor for him.

So DKMS and the city Taxi and Limousine Commission are reaching out to taxi drivers — many of whom share Rayan’s genetic heritage — in hope hacks will get their cheeks swabbed to see if they’re a suitable donors.
