I lost a very good friend last week
We've worked together and have hung out together the past 15 years.

After lunch, we went for a walk together and she started going off about the President and how he is trying to destroy the rich. Her main claim is people who worked hard for a living shouldn't be punished by being taxed so much.

It took a couple minutes before I completely laid into her. We are both equals on pay scale, our economic outlooks are completely different. The bottom line is she is still middle class and it puzzled me to no end why she was sticking her neck out to defend what the rich and what they are doing to this country.

We hadn't really spoke since then. And then Friday, I received this story in my inbox: http://www.govexec.com/story_page.cfm?articleid=47133&oref=todaysnews

We are both federal workers. When Obama froze our pay, she reasoned he was doing it "just to look good".

I just had to rub it in

2. I will never understand
why people who are not, and have no chance of ever becoming, wealthy identify so deeply with the very rich. It's like -- yeah, I'm as poor as dirt, but it's *so* unfair that a guy like Bill Gates has to pay so much income tax! -- apparently not considering that even after Bill Gates sends his big fat check to the IRS he still has a whole buttload of money left. And you and I don't and never will. But somehow we have to protect the wealthy from the ravages of the tax system.

4. Ask her if she realizes most wealthy people in this country didn't work one day for it?
Most of the rich INHERIT their money, they never worked on day in their lives, and that's the lie that's been shoved down our throats.

It's why the Koch brothers want to do away with all taxes, so they can maintain a generational empire.

Why is she so worried about Paris Hilton's trust fund? Is she afraid that Trump's kids won't get their millions?

Take one-third of my pay, and it hurts; but take $100,000,000 from someone that has $3,000,000 and they still get to keep TWO HUNDRED FREAKING MILLION DOLLARS.

Oh, the poor, poor wealthy, whatever will they do?

5. How are higher taxes "punishing" the rich
Edited on Sun Feb-20-11 10:21 PM by EC
when most of them don't even KNOW how much they pay in taxes or how much money they even have? Also isn't it more punishing to them, for the towns they live in to begin to look like slums and increased crime all around them? They don't all live in gated communities and they have to go out sometime...In most of the big cities around here the better restaurants and theaters are in old neighborhoods that aren't the "better parts of town".

On edit: sorry this reply was for the OP wasn't watching what I was doing.
