FOX40 (Sacramento) Crew Attacked in Natomas
Source: KTXL

A FOX40 reporter and photographer were attacked while covering a murder investigation in Natomas.

... Early this morning, a man who friends identify as 27-year-old Chester Jackson was shot and killed in a parking lot outside an IHOP in the 2900 block of Advantage Way. Sacramento Police say it started as a fight inside the restaurant.

... When FOX40 reporter John Lobertini and photojournalist Rebecca Little approached around 4 p.m. to see if anyone wanted to talk about what happened, they were attacked.

Several people pulled Little to the ground by her hair and kicked her in the face. Then, Lobertini was attacked. "I was punched on the side of my face," said Lobertini, "but it was a situation where I was trying to fight off 6 or 7 or 8 people, I can't even count them."

3. Huh?
Since when is a local news crew covering a murder 'ambulance chasing?'

4. When is gang activity news worthy enough to send a team out?
Most local stations don't even cover stuff like that unless someone sends in a video.

5. Do you watch local news? It's pretty much the only thing they cover and doesn't justify beatings n/t

6. Not really unless there is something I think I should
Edited on Sun Feb-20-11 10:42 PM by Cleita
know. However, when I do, my local news does cover the latest murders and other issues, verbally, but they never send crews out. Sometimes a witness sends in a cell phone video which they air, but the only stuff they cover with crews is events like the opening of our new boardwalk, parades and other civic stuff. btw I never said the beating was okay. All I said was I was less sorry because it was Fox covering the basest shit as usual.

7. There were two news crews there. Here's some video taken by the other crew, pretty brutal attack.
IMHO.

Video: http://bcove.me/h2nblojx

And I know that spot.

Just very sad.

12. This goes on all over California every day. It's
not newsworthy enough to send news crews out for. In the meantime in Sacramento, our capital, news is being made by the Legislature and Governor. Why aren't they covering that? Oh, it's Fox News. Of course, they would rather cover a bunch of lowlifes brutalizing and killing each other particularly since there will be plenty of cell phone videos taken by onlookers anyway. Shame on Fox for endangering their news people covering stories that are not newsworthy but sensational.

15. You have a pretty casual attitude towards murder.
If they don't cover these types of stories they will be accused of being insensitive to violent crime.

If it wasn't a Fox news team would you feel any different about this?

19. I know all the local news station affiliates - CBS, ABC, NBC, plus FOX - *always* cover these types
of stories where I'm at, and they nearly always send out a news crew to report "live."

"If they don't cover these types of stories they will be accused of being insensitive to violent crime"

This was my thought, too.

long, it looks like normal reporting to you.

26. What you call "bottom feeding" I call "journalism." Regardless, that television news crew did not
deserve to be assaulted, I don't care whether they worked for FOX or not. Period.

A simple, clear, unambiguous and without-qualifications "no, they did not" would be a welcome reply to see. How about it?

28. I never said they deserved to be assaulted.
I even said I was happy they weren't hurt. Tell me where I said they deserved it! All I said I was a little less sorry because it was a Fox News crew not because of the crew but because the Fox News organization is a despicable organization. Honestly, I wonder sometimes if we all speak English or not.

29. Still waiting on that simple, clear, unambiguous and without-qualifications "no, they did not."
In other words, a statement from you that they did not deserve or otherwise "earn" such treatment, and a further recognition that it was not in any way, manner, shape, or form justified for them to be assaulted in any manner whatsoever for performing their rightful, legal, & constitutionally-protected jobs.

How about it (he asks again)?

25. Do you know how many murders and gang type
activities goes on every night in urban centers? The news covers very few and mostly it's for the sensational and voyeuristic value of what they do cover. It's disgusting what they do.

20. That video shows some shoving but I didn't see a brutal attack
Edited on Mon Feb-21-11 12:06 AM by npk
Unless I missed something, what I saw was just a lot of pushing and shoving. People sticking their hands in front of the camera and just trying to stop the reporter and the camera person from filming them. I am not saying that it was right for the people to put their hands on the news people, but I wouldn't classify it as a brutal attack.

on edit: I did see one or two punches thrown but it didn't look like a steady beat down. Still though very scary for the crew. If there was more to this altercation than what was captured on tape, then maybe that is what the story was referring to.

22. Second video. Link Here. A woman attacks and pulls down the camera-woman.
Comes from behind, and pulls her hair and drags her down.

I'm guessing you didn't watch the second video in which you see, from some distance, what's going on.

Here: http://bcove.me/h2nblojx

Watch it and then I think you'll agree it was pretty unprovoked and nasty.

9. John Lobertini used to work in the the San Francisco Bay
Area local station. He's been around for years. I didn't know he'd gone to FOX or Sacramento.
I hope he and his co-worker fully recover.

10. I don't care if it IS Fox, fuck the thugs who attacked the reporters and beat them.
Edited on Sun Feb-20-11 10:54 PM by Poll_Blind
I watched both videos, read the article. I have seen similar things happen to news crews covering organized crime on the East coast, almost to a tee. Notice, BTW, that only a small percentage of the people who were there to mourn got involved. The sickening shame is the rest of the family and friends have to watch this idiocy attached to the Jackson's death.

I don't care if it IS Fox news, I really don't. If I cheer because a male Fox reporter and his female cameraman are beaten...because they're from Fox News...then fuck-all, I ain't a Lefty, just another empty cheerleader rooting for a Team and nothing more substantial and meaningful.

11. On the plus side, we can thank some of the people present for prevent it from going further.
Especially visible in the second video are both the unprovoked brutality by a few, but also the few who were able to stop it from being worse.

The very worst offenders didn't look like they'd have stopped had nobody intervened.

Still very sad.

13. I forgot to mention that but I did notice it too. At the end of the second video, the ladies and...
...man who appear to be trying to get some distance between the attackers and the repoter/camerawoman. Again (and especially in the second video) you can see that it was a very small percentage of those who had actually gathered that initiated the attack/attacked. I think the rest of them, including myself as a viewer, were horrified that people who clearly think with their fists first would attempt to turn a scene of mourning into a melee.

Again, I have seen this before but not very much. I can't think of a more appropriate word: It just seems to incredibly, utterly tasteless, and not befitting the situation even remotely. What started it was, I think (and you can just catch the beginning of this in the first video) is a woman telling the cameraman that he couldn't be there and he had to leave and once he didn't leave, and especially once he reminded her that it was a public place, she and a couple of the attackers didn't bother thinking they just started attacking. I noticed some of the attackers made sure to outfit themselves with large soda pops (maybe from Subway, all looked exactly from the same place) and there was sort of ugly synergy between that and their ugly display.

17. Fox affiliates' local news isn't the same as Fox News
Edited on Sun Feb-20-11 11:43 PM by Recursion
In fact in a lot of cities the local Fox affiliate is far and away the best local coverage.

They also cover national/world stories since Fox doesn't produce a prime time national evening news.

16. well
i live in the sacramento area and there was a driveby killing of three young men in one of the cities a couple of weeks ago. lots of media coverage at the time. they found the killers, gang members.

apparently, the sacramento area has more murders to date than oakland. it's getting ugly here, folks.
