I lost two Facebook "friends" over a Madison demonstations post...
Boo hoo!

I posted the singing of the national anthem in the Capital building yesterday which was so inspirational but, apparently, it was TOO MUCH for some folks.

Screw 'em!!

18. My boss says I shouldn't sing it
Since I have an Obama sticker on my car, I am "not patriotic".

3. Sort of curious as to who they were...
If I took the time I could figure it out but....not worth it.

I'd rather have a few good friends than a bunch of phony ones.

4. I've defriended people over right wing posts and would do it again in a heartbeat
I refuse to have their lies and ignorance posted on my FB page. As you said, screw 'em. Luckily about 95% of my FB friends are progressives and I aim to keep it at least at that level. No arguing or attempting to reason with brainwashed people. Life's too short to deal with that kind of bs.

5. Sorry, but I find Facebook really creepy
Edited on Sun Feb-20-11 11:54 PM by RufusTFirefly
It's a private corporation attempting to assume the role of a public space.

Except it isn't public. It's private.

The Internet is public. Facebook is private.

A bit like the local shopping mall attempting to replace your public park.

And superficially it seems very much like a public space. That is until you violate their corporate policies.

Needless to say, the privacy issues are immense.

Reminds me of any corporate takeover.

What's the first line out of their mouths?

"Don't worry. Nothing's going to change."

And it usually doesn't.

At first.

15. Yes, it is.
But it's not masquerading as a quasi public space. Also, it doesn't have more than 500 million active users.

Nice try.

Exceptionally vague reasons.

26. Vague? Perhaps. But I disagree
My objection is that it is a private environment that masquerades as a kind of public environment.

In that respect it's like a shopping mall or a housing development with its own park.

In both instances, the spaces appear to be public but are in fact private. The confusion of private space with public space tends to undermine the public space, particularly in tough economic times and when public spaces are under attack.

I am bothered by both privatization and consolidation in a number of spheres of our daily lives and by the disappearance and/or takeover of the public space. Facebook is just one example. And I'm certainly no technophobe nor a technical illiterate by any means. I think I have a pretty good understanding of Facebook's function.

But if you enjoy it and don't have similar qualms, more power to you.

21. I find it 'creepy' from the aspect that it lets/attempts to
put people in a sense into a DB. Instead of actually remembering what your friends are into/doing/etc you have them in this site where it 'keeps' them for you. I always preferred the personal connections of people actually caring about me as a person and to me things like facebook/myspace remove that and insert a reminder that 'so and so' is one of your friends, click here to know more about your friend. Spending time with people getting to know what they like and are into is one of the most enjoyable experiences about people FB can take that away with common interests you reveal through listing/joining.

I see the value in connecting people but that issue along with privacy concerns to a company that continues to expand and show it cares nothing for your privacy so long as you continue to be a potential exploitable asset dissuade me. I'd rather send email, talk on the phone, text, and actually see people in person over keeping in touch with something like FB.

6. I'm on FB....
Hey.. I have reasons!

The kids... anybody under 40 is a kid... are totally fucked. They're talking about dealing with cuts to SS and Medicare and spending generally. Nobody is talking cutting "defense". When I suggested some cuts there.. I got this..

"Guess the people in Afghanistan don't deserve to be free from tyranny. Oh well...leave them to the wolves. I'm sure the Jews in Germany would have been happier if we stayed away too."

Rather than de-friend her, I sent this...and then she de-friended me. Why not let them know how fucked their heads are and let them decide if they want to be your "friend"?
- - - - - -
"‎10 years... 1500 US dead... 10,000 wounded... $380 Billion ....100,000 troops plus 100,000 contractors... total control of the air... unlimited supplies... modern weapons.... and the 25,000 Taliban are still expanding their area of control. And then there's the 30,000 dead Afghan civilians.

We gave it a pretty good shot, and it's just not working. How much more money and blood do we spend? Tell me numbers... how many US and Afghan dead are acceptable?... how much money? Can you guarantee "victory".. and tell me what that would look like?

The bill for our "defense" budget is $7,000 for every family in America. Whether they pay it or borrow it from China, the fact remains....

Afghanistan costs us $300 million a DAY.

Let's close some of the 700 overseas bases we have... 52 in Germany, 23 in Japan before we start cutting off our own people. We can't afford an Empire anymore.

25. Perspectives hardly ever change...
I know this because one of the pages I allow to show up on my wall is "HoaxSlayers".

As the name says, they slay hoaxes. Sort of like Snopes.

every so often I'll share some of their info on my wall for my friends to be able to see.

There it is...people can see it.

What happens? Some of my friends and relatives will still post totally false info on their walls. Rumors. Lies.

One of those rumors involved how Facebook was planning on charging people for having an account maybe a year or so past. People were up in arms. Ready to riot.

I posted HoaxSlayers info refuting the rumor.

Didn't matter. They're still all going bullshit.

OK so it never happened. Nobody remembers how they got duped.

They go on to the next rumor and nothing ever changes.

I guess people just like believing bullshit.

22. I've used part of the last line of your post, that begins with "Let's close some..."

with many people. I like the idea.

Close the bases, saves a butt load of money on lease payments to the host country - an immediate savings there and with the local civilian employees' salaries.

Bring home the troops and their dependents and spread them among the US bases that were downsized, an immediate influx to the economies of the communities surrounding those bases.

Gradually reduce the total population of the military via normal attrition as enlistments expire and reduced recruiting efforts.

Stop the wars and the role of policemen to the world.

on edit: Most people do not realize how many military sites the US has in other countries.

I bantered back and forth a couple of times with some anti-union acquaintances. When I asked them what they thought about pro football players being in a union, the entire thread disappeared.
