By CARYN GRANT - cgrant@macon.com

Former state Rep. Kenneth Birdsong died Saturday following a brief illness, according to his son Roger Birdsong. He was 83.

Birdsong was one of Georgia’s longest serving state legislators, serving 28 years in the state House before retiring in 2004. In that post, he represented Twiggs and Wilkinson counties and parts of Bibb and Jones.

Birdsong, a veteran of World War II and Korea, will be laid to rest at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville.

Birdsong led the Georgia House Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee, and was named vice chairman of the State Veterans Service Board by Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2005.
