Occasionally, since the people I follow cover Bahrain, Yemen and Jordan also, if I see something really important about those countries, I'll post it here but I plan to mostly focus on Libya because they're having the hardest time getting the word out and Qaddafi's brutality is more systematic and I believe the scale exceeds the brutality in the other country.

They're also the country with the most propagandists on Twitter.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, Qaddafi has brought in thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other North African coutries, specifically Chad. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103697256377254&oid=179449562095105 (Youtube link here) Their confessions are that they've been offered between $12,000 - $30,000 each.

Libya protests: 'Terror and bribery are blunt tools now'

...

The regime became nervous, promising students a large number of generous scholarships abroad. Then it vowed to increase salaries.

...

On the 16th, a day before the planned protests, Libyan's could no longer wait. They went out in Benghazi. There was a palpable fear that the hot-blooded second city was going it alone, that the few thousand protesters were lambs going to slaughter. Their courage seemed unimaginable.

Late that night one of the Benghazi protestors posted a video on YouTube. He looked tired. His voice was hoarse.

"To my brothers in Tripoli," he said, "we can't do this alone."

Losing Libya
By Issandr El Amrani September 5, 2009 at 4:15 AM

Libya has certainly been in the news lately. I've never visited the country and have worked on it very little, but from what I know about it (apart from my regular, and yes, facile jokes about Qadhafi) I've always found it profoundly tragic that a country can drift away like this for decades. We know so little about the horrors of the Qadhafi regime that we can't even compare it to other in the region. In this respect, and perhaps more than Saddam Hussein's Iraq, Libya appears to be the Middle East's North Korea. Here are some links and thoughts on recent reading -- this a long one, so the rest is after the jump.

Lockerbie

....

The new West-Libya relationship

....

I suppose this all of this is to be expected in this economic and energy environment, but it is worth highlighting the gravy train Libya's rehabilitation has created. David Manning, Tony Blair's pointman in making the deal to bring in Libya from the cold several years ago, is now on the British Gas payroll using his contacts with the country. The UK has not hosted Qadhafi (yet - for now this would be too unpalatable to the public, as the brouhaha over al-Meghrahi showed), but others have rushed in. In 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy received Qadhafi in Paris (suddenly less adamant about the primacy of human rights in international relations), while the clown Silvio Berlusconi has gone out of his way to appease the Guide, apologizing for Italy's colonial-era crimes, building a 1700km coastal highway and more recently offering to send the Italian air force's show planes for the celebrations. In the US, of course, high-level meetings Qadhafi is still beyond the pale, but Hillary Clinton recently met his fourth son (and possible heir), Muatassim, a few months ago. The encounter gave us this memorable picture:

Fatah: Party wants reconciliation with Hamas

RAMALLAH (AFP) -- President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party has said is ready for new talks with the rival Hamas movement over a long-elusive reconciliation, a spokesman said on Sunday.

The announcement came hours after reports said PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad had offered the Islamist party a spot in a new cabinet being cobbled together in Ramallah.

...

"We are ready to meet the Hamas leadership so that the Egyptian document can be signed," he added, referring to a Cairo-brokered deal that Fatah had already endorsed but Hamas insists requires amendments before signing.

...

With a US veto quashing the draft, Palestinians are expected to refuse a US role in mediation, and have reportedly already asked the quartet to step in and negotiate if Israel is forced to stop construction by a September UN General Assembly vote.

...

Fatah sounds scared shitless right now. I guess Abbas is realizing now that his last fortnight's endorsement of Mubarak wasn't the most intelligent idea.

A deal struck with tyranny
The Libyan people are finally rebelling against their despised ruler and his corrupt regime. But Gaddafi's strength in the Arab world was shamefully bolstered by his oil pact with Tony Blair, says Ian Birrell.

Tony Blair meets Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in Sirte Photo: EPA

6:00AM GMT 21 Feb 2011

...

Ultimately, this is a gruesome test of strength between protesters desperate for change and a regime desperate to cling on to power. There were rumours yesterday that some members of the revolutionary council are not prepared to see thousands slain. But unlike in Tunisia and Egypt, where the generals sided with the protesters, the army has little strength in Libya. Gaddafi has never trusted it, so there have been repeated purges and the remaining skeleton is headed by his sons.

Those brave souls confronting their dictator in Libya are also mounting a challenge to our own foreign policy. It is just seven years since Tony Blair flew to Tripoli and shook hands on a deal that looks grubbier by the day, bringing Gaddafi in from the cold in return for his renouncing his weapons of mass destruction programme. This led to the lifting of sanctions, compensation over the Lockerbie bombing and Western oil companies gaining access to Libyan oil fields. But there is growing fury in Washington over the haste with which Britain handed over a mass murderer in the rush to get access to those lucrative fields.

Even worse, this deal looks like a tragic re-run of the Cold War mistakes, in which the West propped up loathsome despots in return for their support against Moscow. After Gaddafi joined our side in the so-called war on terror, we sold one of the most repressive rulers in the world tear gas, crowd control weapons and sniper rifles. So in that fight to impose democracy in the Arab world, we have ended up providing the very tools that are being used so viciously to resist the fight for civil rights there.

As we watch with horror the events unfurling in Libya, this is a lesson that should never be forgotten. Foreign policy needs to be founded on long-term values and goals, not on cynical horse-trading with blood-stained dictators.

WIKILEAKS
The diplomatic cables revealed by WikiLeaks demonstrate the endemic corruption
within the Qadhafi regime. Qadhafi often speaks out publicly against government
corruption, but the politically-connected elite has direct access to lucrative
business deals. This commercial access can easily be cut off when individuals
fall out of favor. The Qadhafi family and other Jamahiriya political favorites
profit from being able to manipulate the multi-layered and regularly shifting
dynamics of governance mechanisms in Libya. They have strong interests in the
oil and gas sector, telecommunications, infrastructure development, hotels,
media distribution, and consumer goods distribution. The financial interests of
Qadhafi and his key allies present both opportunites and challenges for reform
efforts in Libya. Any reform is likely to be cyclical over the long-term.

EMERGENCY TREATMENT
Do not move the victim unless you must do so to keep him safe or to access care.
Act quickly. Time is your enemy in treating the victim. Victims who reach medical facilities during
the "Golden Hour" have a much better likelihood of surviving.
Assess these five critical factors:

    • (Airway) - If the person is unconscious, check to make sure that his airway is not
obstructed. The tongue can be a common cause of airway obstruction, and simply turning his
    head can solve the problem.
    • (Breathing) - Is the victim taking regular breaths? Can you see his chest rising and
falling? If the patient is not breathing, start rescue breathing immediately
    • (Circulation) - Does the victim have a discernible pulse? If the victims does not have a
    pulse, begin CPR.
    • (Disability/Deformity) - Disability refers to damage to the spinal cord or neck. Check to see
if the victim can move hands and feet. If not, there may be an injury to the spinal cord.
Deformity refers to things such as compound or obvious fractures, dislocations, or anything
that looks out of place or unnatural. These injuries can be worsened by moving him.
    • (Exposure) - Make sure that you fully expose the patient so that you do not miss wounds to
the armpit, buttocks or other difficult-to-see areas.
Control bleeding. Controlling bleeding is most important thing you can do to save a gunshot victim's
    life.
    • Applying direct pressur e is the best way to control most wounds. Use a pad over the wound and
apply pressure directly to the wound. If you have nothing available, even your hand or
fingers can be used to control bleeding.
    • Use pressure points in the arm (between the elbow and armpit), groin (along the bikini line),
or behind the knee to control bleeding in the arm, thigh, or lower leg.
    • Be prepared to treat the victim for shock. Gunshot wounds frequently lead to shock, a
condition caused by trauma or loss of blood that leads to reduced blood flow throughout the
body. Expect that a gunshot victim will show signs of shock and treat him accordingly.
However, do not elevate the legs if the gunshot wound is to the torso, as this will increase
bleeding and make it more difficult for the victim to breathe.
Special instructions for regions of the bod y
    • Head – Gunshot wounds to the head are frequently fatal. Your best option is to keep the head
elevated and get the victim to a trauma center as soon as possible.
    • Face and neck – These wounds typically bleed severely. Use direct pressure to control
bleeding and keep the victim upright. Be careful not to obstruct breathing while controlling
bleeding. With injuries to the neck, be careful that blood flow to the carotid arteries isn't
disrupted, as this can reduce blood flow to the brain.
    • Chest and back – Apply direct pressure to control bleeding; understand that it may be
difficult to control chest bleeding because the ribs make it difficult to compress the
structures that are bleeding. Gunshots to the chest can cause what is known as a "sucking
chest wound". These happen when air travels in and out of the wound with each breath. Treat
    these as follows:
    • Seal wound with hand or airtight material (e.g., plastic film).
    • Apply an airtight bandage on three sides of the wound (see image below). Do not close the
bandage on the fourth side. This will allow the chest to achieve its usual negative pressure
state. Air will escape through the valve during inhalation.
    • Abdomen – Use direct pressure to the injury site. As with the chest, controlling bleeding in
these cases can be quite difficult.
    • Arm or leg – Use direct pressure to control bleeding. Arm and leg injuries from gunshots can
be elevated above the heart to help control bleeding. Use pressure points in the arm, groin,
or behind the knee if direct pressure does not control bleeding.

Thousands protest in Yemen urging Saleh to quit

Anti-government protesters call for the ouster of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh

SANAA (Agencies)
Thousands of Yemenis, including students and MPs, joined a protest near the university campus in the capital Sanaa on Monday calling on veteran President Ali Abdullah Saleh to quit, an AFP reporter said, as a protester has been shot dead in the main southern city of Aden.

Security forces surrounded the protesters as they gathered in a nearby square carrying banners saying: "People want change," "People want to overthrow the regime" and "Leave".

Students, who have been protesting daily over the past week, were joined on Sunday by opposition MPs, who vowed in a statement to take to the streets.

...

Khalaqi is the 12th protester to die in Aden since Feb. 16, according to an AFP tally. Dozens have been wounded.

Drone attack in Pakistan kills four 'militants'

Drone attacks are reported to have killed hundreds of people in 2010

At least four people have been killed in a US drone strike in north-west Pakistan, local officials say.

Missiles struck a compound in the Azam Warsak area of the tribal region of South Waziristan on the Afghan border.

...

The area is a haven for al-Qaeda and the Taliban. US drone attacks have escalated in the restive region since President Barack Obama took office.

...

The US does not routinely confirm that it has launched drone operations, but analysts say only American forces have the capacity to deploy such aircraft in the region.

Now Nat Rothschild hobnobs with Gaddafi jnr

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mandrake/3520920/Now-Nat-Rothschild-hobnobs-with-Gaddafi-jnr.html

After my revelations about how Nat Rothschild had been hobnobbing with the Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska, George Osborne and Lord Mandelson during the summer, Lord Rothschild's lad has been keeping company with another colourful figure in Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the Libyan leader, whom he invited to a party at his town house in Greenwich Village, New York.

Never one to pull his punches, Taki Theodoracopulos, the Spectator columnist who was also at the party, tells me that Seif al-Islam turned up rather naffly dressed. Nat spent some time talking to him, but Taki found him tiring. "I found him even less interesting than reading Leo Tolstoy, which is to say he was not at all interesting."

Mandy’s weekend with Gaddafi son
By GRAEME WILSON Deputy Political Editor and GORDON TAIT

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2746665/Lord-Peter-Mandelson-spends-weekend-with-Colonel-Gaddafis-son-Saif.html

PETER Mandelson spent a weekend at a plush country estate with Colonel Gaddafi's son, it emerged last night.

The Business Secretary enjoyed lavish hospitality with Saif Gaddafi at the mansion owned by the Rothschilds.

...

Ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie also joined the Rothschild family for dinner during Mandy's stay.

Lord Mandelson has already faced condemnation after it emerged he joined Saif at the Rothschild's holiday retreat in Corfu this summer - just days before the first reports of al Megrahi's release emerged.

/... http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2746665/Lord-Peter-Mandelson-spends-weekend-with-Colonel-Gaddafis-son-Saif.html

---

Seif Gaddafi, President Muammar Gaddafi's son, was the guest of honour at a party held by the financier in New York in 2008 and this year he allowed his home in Corfu to be the venue for a meeting between the Libyan and Lord Mandelson.

...

Nat Rothschild's interests are further thought to overlap with those of Seif Gaddafi in Montenegro, where he has been linked to investments in the £500m Porto Montenegro project, which is intended to give the country a leading marina. Gaddafi is thought to be keen, signing up to a range of deals in Montenegro to benefit Libya.

...

It is thought that as a young man Nat Rothschild was intimidated by the prospect of having to live up to the achievements of his father and ancestors. Now, he is seen as a man who may well set new high standards for his family. Mr Munk added: "This kid is special. It's back to when they (the Rothschilds) were ruling the world."

Libya: US accuses Britain of legitimising Gaddafi
The US government has accused Britain of legitimising the Gaddafi regime after the massacre of hundreds of pro-democracy demonstrators in Libya.

By John Bingham 7:15PM GMT 20 Feb 2011

...

Despite the criticism of the violence, both Mr Hague and Kenneth Clarke, the Justice Secretary, defended new multi-million-pound trade links with Libya, opened following Tony Blair’s “deal in the desert” in 2007. Mr Clarke told the BBC: “I don’t think we’ve made a mistake in having investment there.”

Mr Susman said: “I would suggest that to deal with him, to give him greater stature, greater ability on the world front to look like he is a good citizen is a mistake.”

Mona Rishmawi, legal adviser for the UN High Commission on Human Rights, said there was a “real question mark” over arms sales to the regime.

“We are very concerned about any possibility of complicity in human rights violations,” she said. Last week Britain announced it was revoking more than 50 arms export licences for Bahrain and Libya, including items such as tear gas.

SAS trains Libyan troops
The SAS has been ordered by the Government to train Libyan special forces despite the country having armed the IRA, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Gordon Brown and Col Gadaffi Photo: PA

By Thomas Harding, Defence Correspondent 10:35PM BST 11 Sep 2009

For the past six months Britain’s elite troops have been schooling soldiers working for Col Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, which for years provided Republican terrorists with the Semtex explosive, machine-guns and anti-aircraft missiles used against British troops during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Sources within the SAS have expressed distaste at the agreement, which they believe could be connected to the release of the Lockerbie bomber.

...

Downing Street has denied the allegations, but Jack Straw, the Justice Minister, has admitted that trade was a factor in deciding to include Megrahi in an earlier prisoner transfer agreement with Libya. Megrahi was the only person convicted for the murder of 270 people killed in the bombing in 1988 of Pan Am flight 103.

The disclosure that members of the SAS are training their Libyan counterparts will further raise suspicions about exactly what has been agreed behind the scenes between Tripoli and Britain.

BP suspends gas, oil drilling preparations in Libya

LONDON | Mon Feb 21, 2011 4:03am EST

(Reuters) - BP PLC (BP.L) has suspended preparations for exploratory drilling for oil and gas in western Libya due to growing unrest in the north African country, a spokesman for the British energy giant said on Monday.

...

"We are looking at evacuating some people from Libya, so those preparations are being suspended but we haven't started drilling and we are years away from any production," the spokesman said.

61. Members of Gaddafi family living outside the country have been recalled home
The sources quoted Gaddafi's reiteration that neither he nor his family will flee from the country: "We all intend to die on Libyan soil". Asharq al-Awsat learned that all members of the Gaddafi family living outside the country, either due to study or work commitments, have been recalled home. Most of them were living in European countries, and they have been returning to Libya since last Thursday.

I don't know what kind of ammo splits bodies into chunks, but a man on AlJazeera said it was 14.5 mm rounds.

I noticed the bodies were split horizontally in a straight line, and also there was some vertical damage up and down, in a line, like the forces were split into an X with four limbs at 90 degrees.
