Press Release: Anonymous Threats to WBC a Hoax
Edited on Mon Feb-21-11 12:42 AM by WhoIsNumberNone
Source: AnonNews

Dear Phred Phelps and WBC Phriends,

So we've been hearing a lot about some letter that we supposedly sent you this morning. Problem is,
we're a bit groggy and don't remember sending it. Our best guess is that you heard about us on that
newfangled TV of yours and thought we might be some good money for your little church.
You thought you could play with Anonymous. You observed our rising notoriety and thought you
would exploit our paradigm for your own gain. And then, you thought you could lure some idiots into a
honeypot for more IPs to sue.

This is not so foreign to us; as you may have heard, we trade in Lulz. You just do not have enough to
offer right now.

While Anonymous thanks you for your interest, and would certainly like to take a break and have some
fun with you guys, we have more pressing matters to deal with at the moment.
But, we will keep this application on file, and will certainly contact you if any openings become
available in future.

Next time, don't call us. We'll call you.

I know we were all rooting for gay porn on GodHatesFags.com, but now anonymous is claiming that WBC was trying to bait them.

1. On a personal note, I turned down a cult long ago.
Although I find the metaphor in that post interesting.

I am due beer and travel money, and if needed, Anonymous can work to help that also, because they are not anonymous to me.

3. If Anonymous has no leadership and is a broadly spread collective,
how can Anonymous know that no part of the non-organization referred to as Anonymous genuinely threatened the WBC?

4. This is why Anonymous isn't anonymous.
Anonymous (capital A) is mainly the 4chan IRC channels and their derivatives (Encyclopedia Dramatica, et al). What appears to be happening is that Anonymous, the hacking group, is using the term Anonymous (the general concept perpetuated by 4chan) as their name. This release appears to be coming from the Anonymous hacking group. There may be other hacking groups that go by Anonymous, but we know that the various takedowns in the past which have mentioned Anonymous have their own group names.

WBC probably isn't going to be attacked by Anonymous the hacking group.

9. I found this to be a little odd: (from the anon news site linked to in the OP):
"(Also, the problem where you couldn't click the IRC/Radio links and the PayPal/Flattr buttons, has been solved)"

Should brilliant hackers have a prob w/linking to other sites? :shrug;

12. It's not that simple.
It's like a cardiologist attempting brain surgery, or vice-versa.

They have certain know-how and tools, but they don't necessarily know everything about software or hardware interactions. It could also be a completely separate server issue that none of them can lay hands on.

'Hacker' doesn't mean 'Computer Genius'.

18. Good. People like me (no-nothings) think if you can figure out how to hack
you can figure out how to link. :7 I guess I'll let it slide and let them continue to reside in my sig line. :7 :hi:

19. Didn't say I did.

Which is more reasonable an assumption;

A) That every single Anon-Hacker is somehow a total computer expert, like some kind of Super-Doctor that managed to master every field of medicine and can perform any procedure.

B) That they are all somehow different individuals with different abilities, specialties, and weaknesses.

?

To assume that just because someone is a hacker they are also a network specialist, that they have control of any remote server they want, and that they are equipped to deal with absolutely any bug or technical issue, assigns too high a level of omniscience to them to be reasonable.

16. So sweet if thats true.
I picture old Phelpsy and the gang tinkering with their computers and noticing the fixes. The fixes make their computers work better, but is the up-grade a gift from Satan!!!!???

15. My daughter used to be on 4chan and knows these guys.
She was shocked to see that they were becoming world players.
She said they were just ordinary kids like her.

7. not to throw gas on the speculative fire or anything but...
GodHatesFags does appear to be down just now, and has been since at least 40 minutes ago. Maybe it's just over capacity with half the world checking in on it, maybe it's been taken down. I guess we'll all have to tune in tomorrow to find out...
